The Utkarsh SmartGen Credit Card is the entry rung of Utkarsh Small Finance Bank's three-card credit line-up, sitting below Eternal and Rhodium. It does exactly one thing — pays a flat 1% cashback on eligible spends — and asks almost nothing in return. It is invitation-only for existing Utkarsh customers, and it is also available as an FD-backed card, which makes it one of the more realistic options for someone building a credit history from scratch.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Offered to existing Utkarsh Small Finance Bank customers holding an active Savings Account, Current Account, Fixed Deposit or Loan Account. Eligible customers receive a pre-approved or pre-qualified application link on their registered email address.
  • Applicant must be an Indian resident.
  • Age 21 to 65 years for the unsecured card; 18 to 65 years for the FD-backed card.
  • No minimum income is published — issuance is relationship-based rather than income-driven.
  • For the FD-backed variant, the minimum fixed deposit is ₹25,000, and the credit limit granted is 100% of the FD value. A lien is marked on the deposit, which continues to earn interest.
  • No additional documents are required beyond up-to-date KYC with the bank.

Welcome Benefit

There is no welcome benefit. No joining voucher, no bonus cashback, no first-transaction reward. The only first-year concession is the waived annual fee, which every SmartGen cardholder gets automatically.

Cashback Structure: How You Earn

The structure is as simple as Indian credit cards get: 1% cashback on all eligible transactions, with no accelerated categories, no reward tiers, no milestone bonuses and — importantly — no disclosed cap. Cashback is credited to the card account and adjusted against the balance on the next statement, so there is nothing to redeem and no redemption fee.

The complication is not the earn rate. It is the exclusion list. The Key Fact Statement names twelve ineligible categories, and between them they cover a large share of what many households actually put on a credit card — fuel, electricity and telecom bills, insurance premiums, school and college fees, government payments, railway tickets and wallet top-ups all earn nothing.

Illustrative earning example

The Key Fact Statement and MITC contain no worked cashback example, so the following is illustrative only, built by applying the published 1% rate and the published exclusion list to a representative ₹30,000 monthly spend.

Spend categoryMonthly spendEligible?Cashback
Supermarket and grocery₹8,000Yes₹80
Online shopping₹6,000Yes₹60
Dining and food delivery₹4,000Yes₹40
Fuel₹4,000No₹0
Electricity and mobile bills₹3,000No₹0
Cab rides₹2,000No₹0
Movies and miscellaneous₹3,000Yes₹30
**Total****₹30,000**₹21,000 eligible**₹210**

That is ₹210 on ₹30,000, an effective rate of 0.70% rather than the headline 1%. Over a year, ₹3,60,000 of spending at this mix returns roughly ₹2,520 in cashback, and comfortably clears the ₹50,000 threshold that waives the ₹199 renewal fee — so the card costs nothing to hold.

At the other end, a cardholder spending ₹4,000 a month reaches ₹48,000 in the year, misses the waiver threshold by ₹2,000, and pays ₹199 plus 18% GST — about ₹235 — against roughly ₹340 of cashback on a similar spend mix. Still positive, but only just.

Milestone Benefits

None. The card has no milestone spend rewards. The only spend threshold that matters is the ₹50,000 annual figure that waives the renewal fee, and the bank does not publish a list of categories excluded from that calculation.

Other Benefits

  • Fuel surcharge refund — 1% surcharge refunded on fuel transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹400 per statement cycle. GST charged on the surcharge is not refunded. Note that fuel earns the refund but no cashback.
  • RuPay UPI linkage — being a RuPay card, SmartGen can be linked to UPI apps for QR-based merchant payments, which extends its usable footprint well beyond POS and online checkouts.
  • Free add-on cards — up to 5 supplementary cards, with no joining fee and no annual fee on any of them.
  • Interest-free period of 20 to 50 days, depending on where the purchase falls in the billing cycle. Statements generate on the 15th of each month.
  • Three-day grace period on the payment due date before the late payment fee is levied. This grace applies to the fee only — finance charges accrue regardless.
  • Free e-statements and free alerts.

There is no lounge access, no golf, no movie offer, no insurance cover and no concierge. The MITC is explicit that cardholder insurance cover is currently not applicable, and the domestic lounge programme it describes belongs to the Rhodium variant.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn Cashback

The Key Fact Statement lists these twelve ineligible transaction categories:

  1. Wallet recharges
  2. Financial institutions
  3. Government services
  4. Charities
  5. Foreign currency purchases
  6. Insurance
  7. Railway
  8. Mutual funds
  9. Education
  10. Transport
  11. Fuel
  12. Utility payments (electricity, telephone, internet, water)

Two points worth flagging. First, "Transport" is not defined at the MCC level, so it is safest to assume cab rides, tolls and public transport earn nothing, alongside the separately-named railway bookings. Second, "Telephone" sits inside the utilities exclusion, which means mobile bills and recharges are almost certainly out.

Rent is a special case: it does not appear on the exclusion list, so it should earn 1% — but the schedule of charges levies a 1% surcharge on rent payments, which cancels the cashback out and leaves you paying GST on the surcharge. Rent spends are also capped at 40% of the credit limit per billing cycle. Treat rent as a non-earning category in practice.

The bank also reserves the right to change the eligible merchant categories, or replace the cashback programme entirely, at its discretion.

At 43.2% per annum, the unsecured card's finance charge sits at the punitive end of the Indian market. This is a card to pay in full every month.

Is the Utkarsh SmartGen Credit Card Worth It?

For an existing Utkarsh customer, yes — with realistic expectations. Ownership is effectively free, the 1% is uncomplicated, cashback needs no redemption effort, and RuPay UPI linkage makes it usable at small merchants where a Visa or Mastercard credit card would be declined. For someone with no credit history, the FD-backed version at a ₹25,000 minimum deposit is a genuinely sensible way to start building a CIBIL score while the deposit keeps earning interest.

It suits you less if your spending is concentrated in bills, fuel, insurance, education or travel — all excluded, which can drag the real return well below 1%. It is also the wrong card if you want lounge access, travel benefits or a welcome bonus, none of which exist here. And because it is invitation-only for existing customers, it is not something you can simply apply for on a comparison site. Anyone who already banks elsewhere will find flat-rate cashback cards in the open market with narrower exclusion lists.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the cashback rate on the Utkarsh SmartGen Credit Card? A flat 1% on all eligible transactions. There are no accelerated categories and no disclosed monthly or annual cap.

Is the Utkarsh SmartGen Credit Card lifetime free? Not quite. There is no joining fee and no annual fee in the first year. From year two the fee is ₹199 plus GST, waived if you spent ₹50,000 in the previous year.

Can anyone apply for the SmartGen Credit Card? No. It is offered to existing Utkarsh Small Finance Bank customers with an active Savings, Current, FD or Loan account, who receive a pre-approved link by email.

Which transactions do not earn cashback? Twelve categories: wallet recharges, financial institutions, government services, charities, foreign currency purchases, insurance, railway, mutual funds, education, transport, fuel and utility payments including electricity, telephone, internet and water.

Does the card earn cashback on UPI payments? It is a RuPay card and can be linked to UPI apps for QR-based merchant payments. Those spends earn the standard 1% provided the merchant category is not on the exclusion list.

How is the cashback credited? It is credited to the credit card account and adjusted against the balance on your next statement. There is no redemption process and no redemption fee.

What is the fuel benefit? A 1% fuel surcharge refund on transactions between ₹400 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹400 per statement cycle. GST on the surcharge is not refunded, and fuel spends earn no cashback.

Does the SmartGen card offer airport lounge access? No. Among Utkarsh credit cards, complimentary domestic lounge access is a Rhodium benefit only.

What is the interest rate? Up to 3.6% per month, or 43.2% per annum, on the unsecured card. The schedule of charges lists 2.5% per month (30% p.a.) for FD-backed cards. Cash advances attract interest from the withdrawal date with no interest-free period.

How does the FD-backed SmartGen card work? You need a fixed deposit of at least ₹25,000 with the bank. A lien is marked on it, you get a credit limit equal to 100% of the deposit value, and the FD continues to earn interest throughout.

Are add-on cards chargeable? No. Up to five supplementary cards can be issued, with no joining fee and no annual fee.

What happens if I pay late? A ₹500 late payment fee applies, plus interest on the outstanding balance. There is a three-day grace period from the due date for the fee, but not for finance charges. Cards are suspended once a payment is 14 days overdue and permanently blocked at 60 days past due.

Is there a fee for rent payments? Yes — a 1% surcharge on rent transactions, with rent spends capped at 40% of your credit limit in a billing cycle. Since the surcharge matches the cashback rate, rent is best treated as a non-earning category.
