The Scapia Federal Credit Card is a co-branded card from Federal Bank and Scapia Technology Pvt. Ltd., built around one idea: your everyday spending should convert into travel. It is genuinely lifetime free, charges no foreign currency markup at all, and hands out unlimited domestic lounge access to anyone who spends ₹20,000 a month. The catch is that all your rewards are locked inside the Scapia app and can only be spent on travel — and a long list of everyday categories earns nothing.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 21 to 65 years for salaried applicants; 25 to 65 years for self-employed applicants
  • Residency: Resident Indian citizen
  • Other criteria: As per Federal Bank's credit card onboarding policy
  • Income: Federal Bank does not publish an official income threshold. Aggregator sites indicate an indicative minimum of roughly ₹30,000–₹35,000 per month for salaried applicants or ₹4–5 lakh per annum for self-employed applicants — treat these as unofficial.

Onboarding is fully digital through the Scapia app. The virtual card is activated immediately and the physical card is delivered in 2–5 days.

Welcome Benefit

Neither the Federal Bank product page nor the card's Terms & Conditions documents a welcome voucher or bonus coin offer. Treat any welcome benefit you see advertised as a promotional campaign that may not be running when you apply — confirm it in the Scapia app before you count on it.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

Everything on this card is denominated in Scapia Coins, and the single most important number is the conversion: 5 Scapia Coins = ₹1. Rewards earned on card transactions are converted to Scapia Coins on your statement date at 1 Reward = 1 Scapia Coin.

That means the headline percentages are not cashback percentages. Here is what they actually translate to:

Spend typeAdvertised rateCoins per ₹100Effective value
Travel booked on the Scapia app20% Scapia Coins20 coins**4%**
All eligible spends (Visa variant)10% Scapia Coins10 coins**2%**
All eligible UPI, online and offline spends (RuPay variant)5% Scapia Coins5 coins**1%**
Excluded categoriesNil0**0%**

There are no monthly or annual caps on earning disclosed in the Terms & Conditions — but there are minimum transaction thresholds:

  • On the Visa variant, a purchase must be ₹20 or above to earn anything.
  • On the RuPay variant, a transaction must be more than ₹500 to earn anything. This is a meaningful restriction, because most UPI transactions are small.

The T&C's own worked example

The Terms & Conditions illustrate the rounding rule directly: spend ₹48 and 5 rewards are credited; spend ₹52 and 5 rewards are also credited. Coins are rounded to the nearest whole coin, so small transactions lose a little value to rounding.

An illustrative annual example

Assume a Visa-variant cardholder spending ₹45,000 a month:

CategoryMonthly spendRateCoins earnedValue
Travel booked on Scapia app₹8,00020%1,600₹320
Shopping, dining, groceries, online₹25,00010%2,500₹500
Fuel, rent, utilities, insurance₹12,000Nil0₹0
**Total****₹45,000**—**4,100****₹820**

That works out to roughly ₹9,840 a year in travel value on ₹5.4 lakh of annual spend — an effective return of about 1.8% overall, dragged down by the excluded categories. Since the card costs nothing, that entire figure is net value.

Milestone Benefits

There is one milestone, and it repeats every month: spend ₹20,000 in a billing cycle to unlock unlimited complimentary domestic lounge access (plus complimentary dining, shopping or spa options at participating airports) for the following cycle.

Important details:

  • The benefit must be re-earned every month. Miss the ₹20,000 threshold and you lose lounge access for the next cycle.
  • Access is enabled within 3–5 working days after your billing date.
  • Spends on the Visa variant and the RuPay variant are assessed separately and cannot be clubbed towards the ₹20,000.
  • Excluded reward categories still count towards the ₹20,000 spend threshold, since the condition is on billing-cycle spend rather than on rewarded spend.

Other Benefits

Zero forex markup. Scapia Federal cardholders are not charged any foreign currency markup on international transactions. Against a typical 3.5% markup, this alone can be worth thousands of rupees on a single overseas trip. Note the trade-off: forex transactions earn no Scapia Coins, so international spending saves you money rather than earning you rewards.

Unlimited domestic lounge access. Entry works through a QR code generated in the Scapia app, which must be validated along with a valid boarding pass at the lounge. Guests are not covered — accompanying travellers pay standard lounge rates. Lounges may operate on a first-come, first-served basis and can impose maximum stay policies (typically 2–3 hours).

Fuel surcharge waiver. 1% surcharge waiver on fuel transactions up to ₹5,000, capped at ₹500 per month.

EMI options. Post-purchase EMI at 14–20% p.a., in-store EMI via Pine Labs at 16% p.a., and online EMI via PayU at 15.99% p.a., across 3 to 24-month tenures.

Partner offers. Scapia periodically runs discounts and offers with partner merchants, with terms displayed in the Scapia app.

App controls. Instant in-app repayment, transaction limit settings and permission management, plus 24x7 customer service.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn Scapia Coins

This is the longest exclusion list on any mainstream lifetime-free card, and it is the single biggest reason to think carefully before making this your primary card. Rewards do not accrue on:

  • Fuel and fuel surcharge (MCC 5541, 5542, 5983, 5172)
  • Utility payments (MCC 4900, 4812, 4814, 4816) — this also covers telecom and cable spends
  • Insurance payments (MCC 6300)
  • Rent payments (MCC 6513)
  • Digital wallet loading and top-ups (MCC 6540)
  • Education and school fees (MCC 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299)
  • Government services (MCC 9099 to 9999) — which sweeps in tax payments
  • Business services (MCC 7399, 7311, 7372, 7538, 7392)
  • Crypto, digital assets and financial institutions (MCC 6051, 6012, 6011)
  • Cash withdrawals, money transfers, credit card repayments, gift cards, EMI transactions and forex transactions

Two further points worth knowing. First, rewards are not reinstated on EMI cancellations. Second, buying a service inside a digital wallet app may earn nothing, because the transaction is processed as a wallet load first.

There is also a genuine inconsistency in the T&C worth flagging: the rewards illustration uses a mobile recharge as its example of an earning transaction, while the same section lists telecom spends as ineligible and the MCC table excludes telecom MCCs. Verify recharge behaviour in the app before relying on it.

And it costs extra: fuel and utility spends above ₹50,000 in a month, and all rent and wallet-load transactions, attract a convenience fee of 1% + GST (maximum ₹3,000 per transaction). So these categories don't just earn nothing — they can cost you money.

Is the Scapia Federal Credit Card Worth It?

For the right person, this is one of the strongest zero-cost propositions in the Indian market. If you travel internationally even once a year, the 0% forex markup pays for itself many times over against the usual 3.5% markup. If you fly domestically and can hit ₹20,000 of monthly spend, unlimited lounge access is a benefit that premium cards charge ₹10,000-plus a year to deliver. And a 2% effective return on general spending is respectable for a card that costs nothing.

The case against it is equally clear. Your rewards are not fungible — Scapia Coins can only be redeemed for travel bookings inside the Scapia app, they expire in 36 months, and the whole balance is wiped if you don't use the card for 365 days. The exclusion list removes a large chunk of typical Indian household spending. And the RuPay variant earns only half the Visa variant's rate with a ₹500 per-transaction floor, which makes it a poor UPI workhorse despite being marketed as one.

Get it if you travel regularly, are comfortable booking through Scapia's app, and are adding it as a secondary card for travel and international spending. Skip it if you want flexible redemptions, spend heavily on utilities, fuel, rent or insurance, or want a single card that does everything.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is the Scapia Federal Credit Card really lifetime free? Yes. The joining fee, annual membership fee and add-on card fee are all nil, with no spend condition attached.

What is a Scapia Coin worth? 5 Scapia Coins equal ₹1 when redeemed against flights, hotel/stay and bus bookings or other services on the Scapia app. Scapia can revise this value with one month's notice.

So is the "10% rewards" claim really 10% cashback? No. 10% rewards means 10 Scapia Coins per ₹100 spent, and at 5 coins to the rupee that is ₹2 per ₹100 — an effective 2% return. The 20% travel rate works out to 4%, and the RuPay 5% rate to 1%.

Can I redeem Scapia Coins for cash or a statement credit? No. Coins can only be used for bookings and services on the Scapia app. There is no cash-out, statement credit or transfer option.

Do Scapia Coins expire? Yes. Coins are valid for 36 months from the date they are credited. Separately, your entire coin balance is nullified if you don't use the card for more than 365 days, and coins are forfeited when the card is closed or terminated.

What's the difference between the Visa and RuPay variants? The Visa variant earns 10% coins (2% value) on eligible purchases of ₹20 or more. The RuPay variant earns 5% coins (1% value) on eligible UPI, online and offline spends of more than ₹500, but supports UPI-linked credit card payments. Spends on the two variants are tracked separately and cannot be combined for lounge eligibility.

How do I get the unlimited lounge access? Spend ₹20,000 on the card during a billing cycle. Access is enabled within 3–5 working days after the billing date and applies to the following cycle. You need to hit ₹20,000 every month to keep it.

Are guests covered for lounge access? No. The complimentary access is for the eligible cardholder only. Guests and accompanying travellers pay the charges set by the lounge operator.

Does the card offer international lounge access? No. Only domestic airport lounges are covered under the complimentary programme.

Do I earn rewards on international spending? No. Forex transactions are on the ineligible list. The benefit of using this card abroad is the 0% markup, not the rewards.

What happens to my rewards if I return a purchase? If a transaction is reversed through a refund, chargeback or reimbursement, the coins earned on it are deducted from your overall rewards balance.

Which everyday categories earn nothing? Fuel, utilities, telecom and cable, insurance, rent, wallet loads, education and school fees, government services, business services, crypto, gift cards, cash withdrawals, money transfers, credit card repayments and EMI transactions.
