The South Indian Bank SBI Platinum Credit Card is a ₹2,999 premium card co-issued with South Indian Bank. It pays 2.5% on dining, departmental stores and international spends, gives two complimentary domestic lounge visits every quarter, and returns ₹6,000 of e-gift vouchers at ₹5 lakh of annual spend. There is no spend-based fee waiver, so the milestones are how the card earns its keep.

Eligibility Criteria

The card is distributed through South Indian Bank. SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold; approval rests on the bank's assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

An identical card, the Karur Vysya Bank - SBI Platinum Credit Card, is distributed through Karur Vysya Bank. The two product pages are the same line for line apart from the bank name. Choose on banking relationship, not economics.

Reward Structure

Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1 of your outstanding bill. Every rate below is stated after that conversion, because "5X" means nothing until you know what a point is worth.

SpendPointsEffective rate
Dining10 RP per ₹100 (5X)**2.5%**
Departmental stores10 RP per ₹100 (5X)**2.5%**
**International spends**10 RP per ₹100 (5X)**2.5%**
Everything else2 RP per ₹100**0.5%**
FuelNil**0%**

The accelerated band is capped at 7,500 Reward Points a month, shared across all three legs, binding at ₹75,000 of such spend in a month.

SBI states what happens past it: "After reaching the capping limit, 2 Reward Points for every Rs. 100 spent will continue to accrue." The rate falls back to the base rate, not to zero — better than the treatment on many co-brand cards, where the accelerated category simply stops earning.

The international leg does not cover its own cost

2.5% on international spends reads well until you put it next to the card's 3.5% forex markup. Spend ₹100 abroad, pay ₹3.50 in markup, earn ₹2.50 back: net 1% down. The accelerated rate reduces the pain of foreign spending; it does not turn it into a benefit. If overseas spend matters to you, SBI Card ELITE's 1.99% markup is worth more than this card's 5X.

Category is decided by MCC

The rate follows the merchant's MCC, assigned by Visa, not by what the shop sells. A restaurant billed under a hotel's code earns the base rate. SBI's page for this card also names "Departmental Stores" without separately naming grocery — the two are grouped together across SBI's range in practice, but a pure supermarket transaction is worth verifying on your first statement.

Welcome and Milestone Benefits

Welcome: a ₹3,000 e-gift voucher, chosen from Yatra, Hush Puppies, Bata, Westside, Aditya Birla Fashion, Shoppers Stop and others. The voucher link is sent to your registered email and mobile within 21 days of the annual fee being realised — not on approval — and is claimed by logging in with your registered mobile number and an OTP.

Milestones: two ₹3,000 e-gift vouchers, at ₹4,00,000 and ₹5,00,000 of annual spend, from the same brand list.

Annual spendMilestone value
₹4,00,000₹3,000
₹5,00,000₹3,000
**Both cleared****₹6,000**

The rungs sit just ₹1 lakh apart and pay the same amount, which creates a clear planning point: if your spend is heading for ₹4.2 lakh, the extra ₹80,000 to reach ₹5 lakh returns ₹3,000 — an effective 3.75% on that stretch.

There is no spend-based fee reversal. The ₹2,999 is payable every year. Cleared in full, the milestones return double it.

Lounge Access

2 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits every quarter — 8 a year. A strong domestic entitlement at this fee.

Internationally, the card includes complimentary Priority Pass membership worth US$99, covering 1,000+ lounges worldwide. But each visit costs US$27 plus taxes, the membership is valid for 2 years only, and only primary cardholders are eligible. What you save is the $99 joining fee; no visit is free. At roughly ₹2,300 a visit, treat the international lounge entitlement as zero when comparing against cards that include free international visits.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹42,000 a month — ₹5.04 lakh a year, clearing both milestones:

CategoryMonthly spendPointsValue
Dining₹9,000900₹225
Departmental stores and grocery₹13,0001,300₹325
Everything else₹20,000400₹100
**Monthly total****₹42,000****2,600****₹650 — 1.55%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points₹7,800
Milestone vouchers (₹4L + ₹5L)₹6,000
Welcome voucher (year one only)₹3,000
**Year-one total****₹16,800**
**Steady-state total****₹13,800**
Annual fee**₹2,999** (never waived)
**Net, steady state****₹10,801 — 2.14% of spend**

At ₹2 lakh of annual spend the same profile returns roughly ₹3,700 against the ₹2,999 fee — thin, with both milestones unclaimed.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — excluded across SBI's range
**Cash advances**2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps (payments made directly to an institution attract nothing).

Is the South Indian Bank SBI Platinum Worth It?

Yes, if you will spend ₹4–5 lakh a year. The milestone vouchers return ₹6,000 against a ₹2,999 fee, 2.5% on dining and departmental stores with a ₹75,000 monthly ceiling is competitive, and eight domestic lounge visits is generous at this price.

Yes, if you fly domestically. Two lounge visits a quarter beats most cards at ₹2,999.

No, if your annual spend is under ₹2.5 lakh. With no fee waiver and unreachable milestones, the ₹2,999 is not recovered. SBI's own SimplySAVE covers more everyday categories at ₹499.

No, as an international card. The 5X does not cover the 3.5% markup, and Priority Pass costs US$27 a visit. SBI Card ELITE charges 1.99% forex and includes six genuinely free international visits a year.
