Reliance SBI Card PRIME Review 2026: 5% on AJIO and JioMart, the UPI Exclusion & FAQs

Reliance SBI Card PRIME costs ₹2,999 and pays 5% on AJIO and JioMart, 2.5% at Reliance Retail stores and 1.25% on dining and travel. But UPI payments are excluded from both Reliance rates. Full maths, the two ₹3 lakh thresholds, fees and FAQs.

The Reliance SBI Card PRIME pays 5% at AJIO and JioMart online and 2.5% at Reliance Retail stores, uncapped, for a ₹2,999 fee reversed at ₹3 lakh. It opens with a ₹3,000 Reliance Retail voucher plus ₹11,999 of discount vouchers, and pays an ₹8,750 voucher at ₹3 lakh of Reliance spend.

Two things the marketing does not foreground. UPI payments are excluded from both Reliance rates. And the milestone and the fee reversal both sit at ₹3 lakh but are measured on completely different bases.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

UPI Payments Are Excluded From Both Reliance Rates

This is the condition most likely to cost you money, and SBI states it twice — "except on UPI Payments" appears against both the AJIO/JioMart rate and the Reliance Retail store rate.

Pay at a Reliance Retail store by scanning a QR code and you drop from 2.5% to the 0.5% base rate. Swipe, tap or enter the card details and you keep the accelerated rate.

On a card built around a retailer whose stores actively push UPI at the till, that is a real trap. Use the card as a card, not through a UPI app.

The Two ₹3 Lakh Thresholds Are Not the Same Threshold

The second thing to get right:

BenefitThresholdMeasured on
**Fee reversal**₹3,00,000 a year**Total** annual spend
**Milestone voucher (₹8,750)**₹3,00,000 a year**Reliance Retail spend only**

They look identical on SBI's page and they are not. A cardholder spending ₹3.5 lakh a year split ₹1 lakh at Reliance and ₹2.5 lakh elsewhere gets the fee reversal but no milestone voucher.

₹3 lakh of Reliance Retail spend is ₹25,000 a month at Reliance stores — a serious commitment, reachable mainly by households doing their weekly grocery and most of their electronics and apparel buying there.

Reward Structure

The dining and movies band is capped at 7,500 Reward Points per statement cycle, after which 2 Reward Points per ₹100 continue. The AJIO/JioMart and Reliance Retail bands are not covered by that cap — SBI's T&C caps dining and movies alone — so the 5% headline rate is genuinely uncapped.

5% uncapped at AJIO and JioMart is the card's strongest feature and is competitive with anything in the market for those two merchants specifically.

Two modelling notes:

  • The participating Reliance Retail store list is published in a separate PDF. The main recognised brands are Reliance Digital, Reliance Trends, Reliance Smart and Reliance Fresh; other Reliance formats may or may not qualify, and comparison tools will score them at the base rate.
  • The international element of the 1.25% band is a geography condition and cannot be modelled from merchant categories. With a 3.5% forex markup, earning 1.25% abroad still leaves you 2.25% down.

Welcome Benefit

Two parts, and only one is a cash equivalent:

  • A ₹3,000 Reliance Retail voucher on payment of the joining fee
  • Additional discount vouchers worth ₹11,999 for participating Reliance Retail stores

Both delivered within 30 days of joining-fee realisation.

The ₹3,000 voucher covers the ₹2,999 fee in year one. The ₹11,999 figure is larger but softer — discount vouchers are not cash equivalents. Their realisable value depends on the discount structure, which SBI does not publish, and on your buying enough at the qualifying stores to use them. Treat ₹11,999 as a headline, not a number.

Note also that both the welcome and milestone vouchers are redeemable only at participating Reliance Retail stores. If you would not shop there anyway, their value to you is much lower than face.

Milestone

A Reliance Retail voucher worth ₹8,750 at ₹3,00,000 of Reliance Retail spend.

That is a 2.9% return on the qualifying spend, on top of the 2.5% the card already pays on it in Reward Points — and the two stack. A cardholder genuinely doing ₹25,000 a month at Reliance takes roughly 5.4% combined on that spend.

It is the card's best feature for the right shopper, and unreachable for everyone else.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹50,000 a month — ₹6 lakh a year total, of which ₹1.8 lakh at Reliance (so the fee reverses but the milestone does not):

CategoryMonthly spendRatePointsValue
AJIO and JioMart online₹6,0005%1,200₹300
Reliance Retail stores (card, not UPI)₹9,0002.5%900₹225
Dining, movies, airlines₹7,0001.25%350₹87.50
Everything else₹25,0000.5%500₹125
Fuel, rent, wallet₹3,0000%0₹0
**Monthly total****₹50,000****2,950****₹737.50 — 1.48%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points earned₹8,850
Milestone (₹1.8 lakh Reliance spend — **short of ₹3 lakh**)₹0
Welcome voucher (year one)₹3,000
**Year-one total****₹11,850**
**Steady state****₹8,850**
Annual fee**₹0** (reversed at ₹3 lakh total spend)
**Effective return****1.48% of spend**

Now push Reliance spend to ₹25,000 a month and the milestone lands: the same card returns ₹8,850 + ₹8,750 = ₹17,600, or 2.9% — double. The milestone is the difference between a decent card and a very good one.

Where You Won't Earn

SBI names the base-rate exclusions: fuel, property rental and wallet upload, plus cash advances.

ExcludedMCCs
Fuel5172, 5541, 5542, 5983
Rent and property management6513, 7349
Wallet loading6540, 6541

And, functionally, any Reliance purchase paid by UPI — it earns the 0.5% base rate rather than 2.5% or 5%.

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000, capped at ₹100 per statement cycle.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

The PRIME doubles everything. But note the milestone threshold rises nearly fourfold — from ₹80,000 to ₹3,00,000 of Reliance Retail spend — so the milestone is far harder to reach.

Break-even on the ₹2,500 fee difference, on the AJIO/JioMart rate alone: ₹2,500 ÷ 2.5 percentage points = ₹1,00,000 of annual AJIO and JioMart spend. Add the Reliance store band and the doubled base rate and the crossover falls, but the standard card's ₹80,000 milestone is much more achievable for a moderate Reliance shopper.

Is the Reliance SBI Card PRIME Worth It?

Yes, if you spend ₹1 lakh+ a year at AJIO and JioMart. 5% uncapped at those two merchants is excellent and the fee reverses at ₹3 lakh of total spend.

Yes, if you can reach ₹3 lakh of Reliance Retail spend. The ₹8,750 voucher stacks on top of the 2.5% rate for a combined ~5.4% on that spend.

No, if your Reliance spend is moderate. The standard ₹499 card's milestone needs only ₹80,000 of Reliance spend and returns ₹2,250 — proportionally a far easier win.

Use the card as a card. UPI payments are excluded from both Reliance rates, and a QR scan at a Reliance till costs you 80% of the benefit.

Don't count the ₹11,999 as money. Those are discount vouchers whose realisable value depends on a structure SBI does not publish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the Reliance SBI Card PRIME? ₹2,999 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed at ₹3,00,000 of total annual spend.

What is the reward rate? 5% at AJIO and JioMart online, 2.5% at participating Reliance Retail stores, 1.25% on dining, movies, entertainment, domestic airlines and international spends, and 0.5% on everything else. The 1.25% band is capped at 7,500 Reward Points per statement cycle; the 5% and 2.5% Reliance-brand bands have no published cap.

Do UPI payments earn the accelerated rate? No. SBI excludes UPI payments from both Reliance rates — the exclusion appears twice on its page. Paying at a Reliance store by QR code drops you to the 0.5% base rate.

Is the milestone measured on total spend? No, and this catches people out. The ₹8,750 milestone voucher needs ₹3,00,000 of Reliance Retail spend, while the fee reversal needs ₹3,00,000 of total annual spend. The two numbers look the same and are not.

What is the welcome benefit worth? A ₹3,000 Reliance Retail voucher, which covers the fee in year one, plus "additional discount vouchers worth ₹11,999". The second figure is a headline — discount vouchers are not cash equivalents and SBI does not publish the discount structure.

Can I redeem the vouchers anywhere? No. Both the welcome and milestone vouchers are redeemable only at participating Reliance Retail stores.

Does the card offer lounge access? No. Neither Reliance SBI card has a lounge programme or insurance.

Should I take the PRIME or the standard card? Break-even on the AJIO/JioMart rate alone is about ₹1,00,000 of annual spend there. But the standard card's milestone needs only ₹80,000 of Reliance Retail spend against the PRIME's ₹3 lakh — so a moderate Reliance shopper often does better on the ₹499 card.
