SBI Card PRIME is a ₹2,999 premium card with an unusually strong everyday structure: an uncapped 2.5% on dining, departmental stores, grocery and movies, ₹11,000 of milestone vouchers a year, and twelve lounge visits. The fee is reversed at ₹3 lakh of annual spend. It is arguably the best-balanced card in SBI's mid-premium range.

One thing to know before you apply. SBI advertises a headline 5% on utility bills paid by standing instruction — the highest published rate on any SBI card. For anyone applying today it is unavailable: new Autopay registrations on SBI Card's platforms were discontinued on 1 April 2021, and only registrations made on or before 31 March 2021 still earn it. The section below sets out the wording. Judge this card on the uncapped 2.5%, the milestones and the lounges — all of which are genuinely strong — and treat the utility rate as a legacy perk.

SBI Card PRIME Quick Overview

**Card type**Premium everyday rewards card

**Joining / annual fee**₹2,999 + GST, same on renewal — reversed at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment of income, credit history and internal scoring. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

Reward Structure

Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1 of the outstanding bill. Every rate below is after that conversion.

The uncapped 2.5% is the card's quiet strength. Most SBI cards cap their accelerated band at 5,000 to 10,000 points a month. PRIME does not cap the four-category band at all — so a household spending ₹40,000 a month on grocery, dining and cinema earns 2.5% on every rupee of it.

The rate follows the merchant's MCC, assigned by the card network, not by what the shop sells.

The 5% Utility Rate Is Closed to New Cardholders

At 20 Reward Points per ₹100 this is the highest published rate on any SBI card. It is also, for anyone applying today, unavailable — and SBI's product page does not say so.

The rate requires a Standing Instruction registered through SBI Card's own platforms (mobile app, website or agents). And SBI's PRIME T&C booklet states, in the same clause that grants the rate:

As per RBI regulation on processing of recurring transactions, new Autopay registrations has been discontinued on SBI Card platforms (website/mobile App/Outbound calling) from 1st April '21. SI Transactions pertaining to any Autopay registration/s that were made on or before 31st March '21 will continue to be processed.

So only cardholders holding a registration made on or before 31 March 2021 still earn it. A new applicant cannot register a qualifying standing instruction, and therefore cannot access the 20-point rate at all — utility spend earns the 0.5% base rate instead.

If you are choosing PRIME today, score it without the 5% utility rate. If you have held the card since before April 2021 with an active registration, it still pays.

Where it does apply, two further limits:

  • It stops at 3,000 Reward Points per month — the period is stated outright in the T&C, not inferred.

At 20 points per ₹100 that binds at ₹15,000 of qualifying utility spend a month, and past it the 2-point base rate continues.

  • SBI's own utility payment fee applies: **1% of the whole cycle total once utility payments exceed

₹50,000** in a cycle.

The Birthday Rate

20 Reward Points per ₹100 on spends made one day before, on, and one day after your birthday — 5%, capped at 2,000 Reward Points a calendar year, which binds at ₹10,000 of spend in the three-day window.

Worth at most ₹500 a year. Nice, but not a reason to choose the card.

One catch the product page omits: during the three-day birthday window, no other accelerated rate accrues. SBI's T&C says so explicitly. So a birthday dinner earns 20 Reward Points per ₹100 rather than the 20 plus the usual 10 — the rates replace one another rather than stacking. Timing a large purchase into the window is still worth doing, but the gain over the normal 10-point categories is 10 points, not 20.

Welcome, Renewal and Milestone Benefits

Welcome: a ₹3,000 e-gift voucher, chosen from Yatra, Hush Puppies/Bata, Pantaloons, Aditya Birla Fashion or Shoppers Stop.

Renewal: a complimentary one-year Club ITC Silver Tier membership, every year. SBI publishes no rupee value for it, so treat it as a perk rather than a number.

Milestones — and these are substantial:

ThresholdPeriodBenefitValue
₹50,000**Quarterly**Pizza Hut e-voucher₹1,000
₹5,00,000AnnualYatra or Pantaloons e-gift voucher₹7,000

Clear ₹50,000 every quarter and the Pizza Hut vouchers alone are ₹4,000 a year. Add the ₹7,000 annual voucher and the milestone programme returns ₹11,000 — well over three times the fee.

Note the thresholds do not line up. The fee reversal is at ₹3 lakh; the ₹7,000 voucher needs ₹5 lakh. A cardholder optimising only for the fee stops ₹2 lakh short of the bigger prize.

If you hold PRIME Pro, the quarterly Pizza Hut voucher is ₹500 rather than ₹1,000. This article describes the standard PRIME.

Lounge Access

  • 8 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a year, maximum 2 per quarter
  • 4 complimentary international Priority Pass visits a year outside India, maximum 2 per quarter, on a complimentary Priority Pass membership worth US$99

Twelve free lounge visits a year is a strong entitlement at ₹2,999 — and unlike several SBI cards, the international visits here are genuinely complimentary, not a membership you then pay US$27 per visit to use.

Golf — But Only on Mastercard

PRIME's golf benefits are network-gated, which SBI does not flag prominently:

  • 4 complimentary green-fee rounds and up to 50% off golf games — Mastercard variant only
  • 1 complimentary golf lesson a month at selected courses — Mastercard variant only

A Visa cardholder gets luxury hotel benefits and Visa Concierge instead. An American Express variant is also issued. If golf is why you want this card, ask for the Mastercard variant specifically.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹45,000 a month — ₹5.4 lakh a year, which clears every threshold:

CategoryMonthly spendRatePointsValue
Grocery and departmental₹16,0002.5%1,600₹400
Dining and movies₹7,0002.5%700₹175
Utility bills (legacy standing instruction)₹6,0005%1,200₹300
Everything else₹14,0000.5%280₹70
Fuel₹2,0000%0₹0
**Monthly total****₹45,000****3,780****₹945 — 2.1%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points₹11,340
Pizza Hut vouchers (4 × ₹1,000)₹4,000
Yatra / Pantaloons voucher at ₹5 lakh₹7,000
Welcome voucher (year one)₹3,000
**Year-one total****₹25,340**
**Steady state****₹22,340**
Annual fee**₹0** (reversed at ₹3 lakh)
**Effective return****4.1% of spend**

Twelve lounge visits and a Club ITC membership sit on top of that, unpriced.

For a new cardholder, strike the utility line's 5%: that ₹6,000 earns 0.5% instead, cutting ₹270 a month — ₹3,240 a year — from the total, which lands at ₹19,100 steady state, or 3.5% of spend. Still strong, but plan on that figure rather than the one above.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — SBI's wording is explicit: the base rate applies to "all other retail spends, except fuel"
**Cash advances**2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

The 3.5% forex markup is worth flagging on a card sold partly on international lounge access. SBI's reduced 1.99% rate applies to ELITE and AURUM — not to PRIME. If you spend meaningfully abroad, that 1.5-point difference outweighs several of PRIME's perks.

PRIME vs ELITE

PRIME is the better everyday card: lower fee, far lower reversal threshold and an uncapped accelerated band. ELITE is the better travel card, on the strength of the 1.99% forex markup alone. Note the 5% utility rate no longer separates them for a new applicant, since it is closed to new registrations.

Is SBI Card PRIME Worth It?

Yes, if you spend ₹25,000+ a month on everyday categories. The uncapped 2.5% on grocery, dining, departmental stores and movies, plus ₹11,000 of milestones and twelve lounge visits, comfortably justifies ₹2,999 — which is reversed anyway at ₹3 lakh.

Yes, if you can clear ₹50,000 a quarter. The Pizza Hut vouchers alone are ₹4,000 a year, more than the fee.

Do not buy it for the 5% utility rate. New Autopay registrations on SBI Card's platforms stopped on 1 April 2021, so the rate is unavailable to anyone applying today. Judge PRIME on the uncapped 2.5% band, the milestones and the lounges — all of which are excellent — and treat the utility rate as a legacy perk.

No, if you spend significantly abroad. The 3.5% markup is the card's weakest feature. ELITE at ₹4,999 charges 1.99%.

No, if your spend is under ₹1.5 lakh a year. The fee will not be reversed, the quarterly milestones will go unclaimed, and SimplySAVE at ₹499 covers the same four categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of SBI Card PRIME? ₹2,999 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed if annual spend in the previous year reached ₹3,00,000.

What earns 10X Reward Points on PRIME? Dining, departmental stores, movies and grocery — 10 Reward Points per ₹100, which is 2.5%. Unusually, there is no cap on this band.

Can I still get the 5% utility rate? Almost certainly not. It requires a Standing Instruction registered on SBI Card's platforms, and SBI's T&C states that new Autopay registrations there were discontinued on 1 April 2021 under RBI's recurring-transaction rules. Only registrations made on or before 31 March 2021 still earn it. New applicants should assume utility spend earns the 0.5% base rate.

Where it does apply, how does the 5% utility rate work? 20 Reward Points per ₹100, capped at 3,000 Reward Points per month — the period is stated outright in SBI's PRIME T&C booklet. The cap binds at ₹15,000 of qualifying spend a month, after which the 2-point base rate applies. Note SBI also charges 1% on the whole cycle total once utility payments exceed ₹50,000.

What are the milestone benefits? A ₹1,000 Pizza Hut e-voucher for every calendar quarter with ₹50,000 of spend — ₹4,000 a year if all four are cleared — plus a ₹7,000 Yatra or Pantaloons voucher at ₹5,00,000 of annual spend.

How many lounge visits does PRIME give? Eight domestic a year (max 2 per quarter) and four international a year (max 2 per quarter), on a complimentary Priority Pass membership. Unlike some SBI cards, the international visits are genuinely free.

Is the golf benefit available on all variants? No. The four complimentary green-fee rounds, the 50% discount and the monthly golf lesson are on the Mastercard variant only. Visa cardholders get luxury hotel benefits and Visa Concierge instead.

What is the forex markup on PRIME? 3.5% — SBI's standard rate. The reduced 1.99% applies to ELITE and AURUM, not PRIME.

What is the birthday reward? 20 Reward Points per ₹100 on spends one day before, on, and one day after your birthday, capped at 2,000 points a calendar year — worth at most ₹500. During that window no other accelerated rate accrues, so birthday spend on dining or grocery earns 20 points rather than 30.
