PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK Review 2026: 10% on PhonePe, the ₹4,500 Monthly Ceiling & FAQs
PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK costs ₹1,499 and pays 10 Reward Points per ₹100 on PhonePe and 5 on online spends — but every rate is capped, giving a hard ₹4,500 monthly ceiling. Full maths, the caps SBI doesn't publish, fees and FAQs.
The PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK advertises 10 Reward Points per ₹100 on PhonePe and 5 on online spends, at Re. 1 a point, for a ₹1,499 fee reversed at ₹3 lakh. Those are genuinely high headline rates.
What SBI's product page does not tell you is that every single rate on this card is capped — including the base rate — and that the accelerated PhonePe rate applies to only five categories, not to PhonePe spend generally. Together those caps put a hard ceiling of ₹4,500 a month on what the card can return. This article leads with them, because they are what determines whether the card is worth holding.

Eligibility Criteria
SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.
Every Rate Is Capped — Including the Base Rate
This is the card's defining feature and SBI's product page does not mention it. The figures below come from SBI's own reward-programme terms and conditions, not from the marketing page.
| Rate | Headline | Monthly cap | Cap binds at | Max value a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **PhonePe** (5 categories) | 10 RP per ₹100 | 1,500 points | **₹15,000** of spend | ₹1,500 |
| **Online spends** | 5 RP per ₹100 | 1,000 points | ₹20,000 of spend | ₹1,000 |
| **Everything else** | 1 RP per ₹100 | 2,000 points | ₹2,00,000 of spend | ₹2,000 |
| **Hard ceiling** | **₹4,500** |
A capped base rate is unusual. Most cards cap their accelerated bands and leave the base rate open; here every rupee you spend is inside a cap.
The 10% headline is the tightest of the three: it binds at just ₹15,000 of qualifying PhonePe spend a month. Past that, the rate does not fall back to 1% — SBI publishes no fallback, so treat further spend in that band as earning nothing for the rest of the month.
Annualised, the absolute maximum this card can return is ₹54,000, and reaching it requires hitting all three caps every month.
The 10% Applies to Only Five Categories
The second thing SBI's product page omits. The accelerated PhonePe rate covers only:
Recharges · Utilities · Bill payments · Insurance · Travel
It is not 10% on PhonePe spend generally. A PhonePe payment to a merchant outside those five categories earns the base rate.
Two further conditions from the same terms:
- Accelerated categories are identified from PhonePe's own merchant, terminal and VPA identifiers "on a best effort basis" — so a qualifying merchant may not always be recognised.
- Insurance within that band has its own tighter sub-cap of 500 points a month, against the 1,500 that applies to the rest. So the insurance leg maxes out at ₹5,000 of spend a month, not ₹15,000.
What Changed on 1 July 2026
Two changes took effect and both are live now:
Scan-and-pay and online UPI transactions made OUTSIDE PhonePe now earn nothing at all. Previously these earned at the applicable rate. If you use the card's UPI linkage away from the PhonePe app, that spend is now dead.
Scan-and-pay transactions made WITHIN the PhonePe app continue to accrue 1% value back.
The ₹100 Minimum
A transaction must be at least ₹100 to earn any Reward Points. This is the first condition in SBI's reward-programme terms and appears nowhere on the product page. A ₹90 recharge earns nothing at any rate — which matters on a card built around small recurring payments.
What the Points Are Worth
₹1 per Reward Point — SBI states it outright. And unusually, points redeem for cash as well as vouchers.
That cash option is worth flagging. Most SBI cards earn Reward Points worth ₹0.25 each, redeemable only through a catalogue or as statement credit. Here a point is a rupee and can leave as cash. It makes this one of the more liquid points currencies in SBI's range.
The Published Exclusions
Unusually, SBI's reward-programme terms name the excluded merchant category codes outright:
| Excluded | MCCs |
|---|---|
| **Rent and property management** | 6513 |
| **Wallet loading** | 6540, 6541 |
| **Fuel** | 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 |
| **Education** | 8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299 |
| **Government spends** | 9311, 9399 |
| **Digital gaming platforms** | 5816, 7993, 7994 |
Also excluded: disputed transactions, Encash, ATM withdrawals, Flexipay, merchant EMI and financial charges.
Note that education and government payments are excluded — both are things people commonly pay through PhonePe.
Welcome Benefit and Milestone
Welcome: a ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card. That covers the ₹1,499 fee exactly in year one.
Milestone: a ₹5,000 Yatra voucher at ₹5,00,000 of annual spend. Travel-restricted rather than cash, and it sits well above the ₹3 lakh fee-reversal threshold — a cardholder optimising only for the fee stops ₹2 lakh short.
Lounge Access
4 complimentary domestic airport lounge visits a year, maximum 1 per quarter. Unused quarters do not carry forward.
The card also carries a complimentary Priority Pass membership worth US$99 — for the first two years only — but SBI publishes no complimentary international visits to go with it. The membership gives access; every visit is charged. Treat the international lounge entitlement as zero.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹45,000 a month — ₹5.4 lakh a year, clearing both the fee reversal and the milestone:
| Category | Monthly spend | Rate | Points | Capped? | Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PhonePe recharges, utilities, bills | ₹12,000 | 10% | 1,200 | Under 1,500 ✓ | ₹1,200 |
| Online shopping | ₹15,000 | 5% | 750 | Under 1,000 ✓ | ₹750 |
| Everything else | ₹16,000 | 1% | 160 | Under 2,000 ✓ | ₹160 |
| Fuel | ₹2,000 | 0% | 0 | — | ₹0 |
| **Monthly total** | **₹45,000** | **2,110** | **₹2,110 — 4.7%** |
Annual tally:
| Reward Points earned | ₹25,320 |
|---|---|
| Milestone Yatra voucher at ₹5 lakh | ₹5,000 |
| Welcome PhonePe gift card (year one) | ₹1,500 |
| **Year-one total** | **₹31,820** |
| **Steady state** | **₹30,320** |
| Annual fee | **₹0** (reversed at ₹3 lakh) |
| **Effective return** | **5.6% of spend** |
That is a genuinely strong return — provided your spending fits the card's shape. Push PhonePe spend to ₹25,000 a month and the extra ₹10,000 earns nothing, because the 1,500-point cap binds at ₹15,000.
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹1,499 + GST |
| Renewal fee | ₹1,499 + GST, reversed at ₹3,00,000 annual spend |
| Add-on card fee | Nil |
| Finance charge | 3.75% per month — **45% per annum** |
| Interest-free period | 20 to 50 days; none if any part of last month's bill is unpaid |
| Forex markup | 3.5% |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5%, minimum ₹500 |
| Fuel surcharge waiver | 1% on ₹500–₹3,000, max ₹100 per cycle |
| Rent payment fee | ₹199 per transaction |
| Wallet load fee | 1% above ₹1,000 |
| Utility payment fee | 1% when the cycle total exceeds ₹50,000 |
| Late payment | ₹100 to ₹1,300 by balance |
| Overlimit | 2.5%, minimum ₹600 |
| GST | 18% on all of the above |
Watch the utility interaction. Utilities earn 10% through PhonePe — but SBI charges 1% on the whole cycle total once utility payments exceed ₹50,000. Above that level you are paying 1% to earn 10%, which is still positive but reduces the edge.
SELECT BLACK vs PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE
| PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE | **SELECT BLACK** | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹499 | ₹1,499 |
| Fee reversal | ₹1,00,000 | ₹3,00,000 |
| PhonePe rate | 3% | **10%** |
| PhonePe cap | 1,000 pts/month | **1,500 pts/month** |
| Online rate | 2% | **5%** |
| Online cap | 750 pts/month | 1,000 pts/month |
| Base rate | 1% | 1% |
| Base cap | 1,000 pts/month | **2,000 pts/month** |
| **Monthly ceiling** | **₹2,750** | **₹4,500** |
| Welcome | ₹500 gift card | ₹1,500 gift card |
| Milestone | ₹3,000 at ₹3 lakh | ₹5,000 at ₹5 lakh |
| Lounge | None | **4 domestic a year** |
The ₹1,000 fee difference buys a ₹1,750 higher monthly ceiling — ₹21,000 a year — plus lounge access and larger bonuses. If you can fill the caps, SELECT BLACK is clearly better. If your PhonePe spend is under about ₹5,000 a month, the PURPLE's lower fee and lower reversal threshold win.
Is the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK Worth It?
Yes, if you pay recharges, utilities, bills, insurance and travel through PhonePe. 10% on those five categories up to ₹15,000 a month is ₹1,500 back monthly — ₹18,000 a year — against a fee reversed at ₹3 lakh.
Yes, if you also shop online. The 5% online band adds another ₹1,000 a month at the cap.
Understand the ceiling before applying. ₹4,500 a month, ₹54,000 a year, is the absolute maximum. Beyond the caps the card returns nothing extra, so pairing it with a second card for overflow is sensible.
No, if your PhonePe usage is outside the five categories. Shopping payments through PhonePe earn the 1% base rate, not 10%.
No, if you make lots of small payments. The ₹100 minimum means a ₹60 recharge earns nothing, and that is exactly the kind of transaction people make on PhonePe.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee of the PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK? ₹1,499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend.
Is the 10% rate really on all PhonePe spends? No. It applies to five categories only — recharges, utilities, bill payments, insurance and travel — paid through PhonePe. Other PhonePe payments earn the 1% base rate. SBI states this in its reward-programme terms, not on the product page.
What are the monthly caps? 1,500 Reward Points on the PhonePe band (binding at ₹15,000 of spend), 1,000 on online spends (₹20,000) and 2,000 on everything else (₹2,00,000). That is a hard ceiling of ₹4,500 a month. Insurance within the PhonePe band has its own tighter sub-cap of 500 points.
Is there a minimum transaction value? Yes — ₹100. Transactions below that earn nothing at any rate.
What changed on 1 July 2026? Scan-and-pay and online UPI transactions made outside the PhonePe app now earn nothing. Scan-and-pay within the PhonePe app still earns 1% value back.
What are Reward Points worth? ₹1 each, and they redeem for cash as well as against vouchers — unusual in SBI's range, where most points are worth ₹0.25 and redeem only through a catalogue.
What spends are excluded? Rent (6513), wallet loading (6540, 6541), fuel, education (8211–8299), government (9311, 9399) and digital gaming (5816, 7993, 7994), plus disputed transactions, Encash, ATM withdrawals, Flexipay, merchant EMI and financial charges.
How many lounge visits do I get? Four domestic a year, maximum one per quarter. The Priority Pass membership lasts two years and carries no complimentary international visits — every international visit is charged.
