PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE Review 2026: 3% on PhonePe, the ₹2,750 Monthly Ceiling & FAQs

PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE costs ₹499 and pays 3 Reward Points per ₹100 on PhonePe and 2 on online spends, at Re. 1 a point — but every rate is capped, giving a ₹2,750 monthly ceiling. Full maths, the caps SBI doesn't publish, fees and FAQs.

The PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE is a ₹499 entry card paying 3% on PhonePe, 2% on online spends and 1% on everything else — at Re. 1 a Reward Point, so those are true percentages, not the quarter-rupee points most SBI entry cards earn.

What SBI's product page omits is that every rate on this card is capped, including the base rate, that the 3% applies to only five categories, and that nothing under ₹100 earns anything. Together the caps put a hard ceiling of ₹2,750 a month on the card. This review leads with them.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

Every Rate Is Capped — Including the Base Rate

SBI's product page does not mention any of this. The figures come from its own reward-programme terms and conditions.

RateHeadlineMonthly capCap binds atMax value a month
**PhonePe** (5 categories)3 RP per ₹1001,000 points₹33,333 of spend₹1,000
**Online spends**2 RP per ₹100**750 points**₹37,500 of spend₹750
**Everything else**1 RP per ₹1001,000 points₹1,00,000 of spend₹1,000
**Hard ceiling****₹2,750**

A capped base rate is unusual — most cards leave the base rate open and cap only accelerated bands. Here every rupee is inside a cap.

Past a cap, SBI publishes no fallback rate, so treat further spend in that band as earning nothing for the rest of the month.

Annualised, the absolute maximum this card can return is ₹33,000, and reaching it requires filling all three caps every month.

Note that the caps here are relatively generous relative to the rates: the PhonePe band binds at ₹33,333 a month, which most PURPLE holders will not approach. On this card the caps bite less often than on the SELECT BLACK, where the 10% band binds at just ₹15,000.

The 3% Applies to Only Five Categories

The accelerated PhonePe rate covers only:

Recharges · Utilities · Bill payments · Insurance · Travel

It is not 3% on PhonePe spend generally. A PhonePe payment to a merchant outside those five earns the 1% base rate.

Two further conditions from the same terms:

  • Accelerated categories are identified from PhonePe's own merchant, terminal and VPA identifiers "on a best effort basis" — a qualifying merchant may not always be recognised.
  • Insurance within that band has its own tighter sub-cap of 250 points a month, against the 1,000 that applies to the rest — so the insurance leg maxes out at about ₹8,333 of spend a month.

What Changed on 1 July 2026

Two changes took effect and both are live now:

The online-spend cap was cut from 1,000 to 750 Reward Points a month — a ₹250 reduction in the card's monthly ceiling. Older reviews still quote the higher figure.

Scan-and-pay and online UPI transactions made OUTSIDE PhonePe now earn nothing at all. Scan-and-pay made within the PhonePe app continues to accrue 1% value back.

The ₹100 Minimum

A transaction must be at least ₹100 to earn any Reward Points. This is the first condition in SBI's reward-programme terms and appears nowhere on the product page. A ₹60 mobile recharge earns nothing — and on a card built around small recurring payments, that is a meaningful drag.

What the Points Are Worth

₹1 per Reward Point, which SBI states outright, and points redeem for cash as well as vouchers.

That matters more than it sounds. Most SBI entry cards — SimplySAVE, SimplyCLICK — earn Reward Points worth ₹0.25, redeemable only through a catalogue or as statement credit with a ₹99 fee. Here a point is a rupee and can leave as cash.

It is why the 1% base rate on this ₹499 card beats the 1.67% headline on SimplySAVE in practice for anything outside SimplySAVE's four categories, where SimplySAVE pays just 0.17%.

The Published Exclusions

Unusually, SBI names the excluded merchant category codes outright:

ExcludedMCCs
**Rent and property management**6513
**Wallet loading**6540, 6541
**Fuel**5172, 5541, 5542, 5983
**Education**8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299
**Government spends**9311, 9399
**Digital gaming platforms**5816, 7993, 7994

Also excluded: disputed transactions, Encash, ATM withdrawals, Flexipay, merchant EMI and financial charges.

Education and government payments are both excluded and both are commonly paid through PhonePe — worth knowing before you route them here.

Welcome Benefit and Milestone

Welcome: a ₹500 PhonePe gift card. That covers the ₹499 fee exactly in year one.

Milestone: a ₹3,000 Yatra voucher at ₹3,00,000 of annual spend — travel-restricted rather than cash, and set at three times the ₹1 lakh fee-reversal threshold. A cardholder optimising only for the fee will not reach it.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹30,000 a month — ₹3.6 lakh a year, clearing both the fee reversal and the milestone:

**Steady state****₹9,720**

A 2.7% effective return on a free card is strong for the entry tier — and note the caps are nowhere near binding at this level.

PURPLE vs PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK

The crossover is around ₹5,000 a month of PhonePe spend in the five qualifying categories. Below that, the PURPLE's lower fee and lower reversal threshold win. Above it, SELECT BLACK's 10% rate pulls clearly ahead — though note its cap binds much earlier, at ₹15,000 a month against PURPLE's ₹33,333.

PURPLE vs SimplySAVE — the Fairer Comparison

Both cost ₹499 and both reverse at ₹1 lakh. But they pay in different currencies:

**PhonePe PURPLE**SimplySAVE SBI Card
Accelerated categoriesPhonePe bills, recharges, utilities, insurance, travelDining, movies, grocery, departmental stores
Accelerated rate3% (PhonePe), 2% (online)1.67%
Base rate**1%****0.17%**
Point value**₹1**₹0.25
Redemption**Cash or vouchers**Catalogue / statement credit, ₹99 fee
Accrual denominator₹100₹150

The PURPLE's base rate is nearly six times SimplySAVE's. If your spending does not fall neatly into SimplySAVE's four offline categories, the PURPLE is the better ₹499 card — and its points are worth four times as much each.

Is the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE Worth It?

Yes, for most PhonePe users. At ₹499 reversed from ₹1 lakh, with a ₹500 welcome gift card, 3% on PhonePe bills and a genuine 1% base rate in rupee-valued points, the card costs nothing and returns real money.

Yes, as a better entry card than SimplySAVE for varied spending. A 1% base rate with ₹1 points beats 0.17% with ₹0.25 points on anything outside four categories.

Understand the ceiling. ₹2,750 a month, ₹33,000 a year, is the maximum. In practice most PURPLE holders will never reach it.

No, if your PhonePe usage is outside the five qualifying categories. Shopping payments through PhonePe earn 1%, not 3%.

No, if you make lots of small payments. The ₹100 minimum means a ₹60 recharge earns nothing — and those are exactly the transactions people make on PhonePe.

Consider SELECT BLACK if your monthly PhonePe bill payments exceed about ₹5,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE? ₹499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed at ₹1,00,000 of annual spend.

Is the 3% rate on all PhonePe spends? No. It applies to five categories only — recharges, utilities, bill payments, insurance and travel — paid through PhonePe. Other PhonePe payments earn the 1% base rate.

What are the monthly caps? 1,000 Reward Points on the PhonePe band, 750 on online spends and 1,000 on everything else — a hard ceiling of ₹2,750 a month. Insurance within the PhonePe band has its own tighter sub-cap of 250 points.

What spends are excluded? Rent (6513), wallet loading (6540, 6541), fuel, education (8211–8299), government (9311, 9399) and digital gaming (5816, 7993, 7994), plus disputed transactions, Encash, ATM withdrawals, Flexipay, merchant EMI and financial charges.

Does the card offer lounge access? No. The PURPLE has no lounge programme. The SELECT BLACK includes four domestic visits a year.
