The Paytm SBI Card SELECT pays 5% on Paytm Travel, 2% on other Paytm app purchases and 1% on everything else — at Re. 1 a Reward Point. The 5% band is capped at ₹750 of value a month; the 2% and 1% bands are not. It costs ₹1,499 and includes ₹2 lakh of cyber fraud insurance.

Two things shape the decision: there is no fee waiver at any spend level, and wallet loads are excluded — on any app, including Paytm's own.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

The Mechanism Changed on 1 July 2024

Worth knowing if you are comparing against older reviews. SBI's own note reads:

W.e.f. 1st July '24, the Cashback that you were earning on spends made with your Paytm SBI Card / Paytm SBI Card SELECT will be replaced…

— by Reward Points at Re. 1 each. The headline percentages are unchanged, but the mechanic is not: what used to be cashback credited to your account is now a points balance you redeem. The rupee value per unit is the same, so the arithmetic below holds either way.

Reward Structure

SpendRateCap
**Movies, travel and mall on the Paytm app****5%****₹750 of value a month**
Other purchases on the Paytm app**2%****None published**
Everything else — offline and online stores**1%****None published**
Wallet loads (any app), fuel, cash advances**0%**—

The 5% band is capped at ₹750 of value a month, which binds at just ₹15,000 of qualifying spend — so the headline 5% is worth at most ₹9,000 a year. The 2% Paytm app band and the 1% base rate have no published cap.

The 5% band is also wider than travel alone: it covers movies, travel and mall purchases made through the Paytm app. That makes the ₹15,000 monthly ceiling easier to reach than a travel-only reading suggests.

Points are worth ₹1 each, so these are true percentages, not the quarter-rupee points most SBI cards earn.

The rates are merchant-and-channel conditions

Both Paytm rates apply to spend made through the Paytm app, with the higher rate reserved for the travel vertical inside it. That is a merchant-and-channel condition rather than a merchant category, so:

  • A Paytm Travel booking made outside the app may not earn 5%
  • A merchant you pay via Paytm's payment gateway on their own site may or may not register as Paytm app spend

Worth spot-checking your first statement if either pattern describes your usage.

Wallet Loads Are Excluded — On Every App

This deserves its own heading because of where it sits. SBI excludes wallet loads, and is explicit that it means wallet loads on ANY app, not just Paytm's.

On a card co-branded with a wallet company, that is the term to read twice. Topping up your Paytm wallet with this card earns nothing — and attracts SBI's 1% wallet load fee on amounts above ₹1,000 on top.

Insurance

₹2,00,000 of cyber fraud insurance cover — double the standard Paytm SBI Card's ₹1 lakh.

Cyber fraud cover is unusual. Most Indian cards cover lost-card liability rather than online fraud specifically, so this is a genuine differentiator on a ₹1,499 card.

Welcome Benefit

  • Complimentary Paytm First membership (SBI does not publish a rupee value)
  • Reward Points worth ₹750

The ₹750 covers half the fee in year one. The Paytm First membership's worth depends entirely on whether you would subscribe anyway.

The Missing Fee Waiver

No spend-based fee reversal is published for either Paytm card at any spend level. The ₹1,499 is payable every year regardless of how much you spend.

That is unusual in SBI's range and sets a clear bar: the card must return more than ₹1,499 a year in rewards to be worth holding. At 1% base and 5% on Paytm Travel, that needs roughly ₹1.5 lakh of annual spend at minimum — or about ₹30,000 a year of Paytm Travel bookings on their own.

There is also no milestone programme on the SELECT, unlike the standard Paytm SBI Card, which earns a Paytm First renewal voucher at ₹1 lakh of annual spend.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹35,000 a month:

CategoryMonthly spendRateValue
Paytm Travel (flights, hotels, buses)₹6,0005%₹300
Other Paytm app purchases₹8,0002%₹160
Everything else₹19,0001%₹190
Fuel₹2,0000%₹0
**Monthly total****₹35,000****₹650 — 1.86%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points earned₹7,800
Welcome points (year one)₹750
**Year-one total****₹8,550**
**Steady state****₹7,800**
Annual fee**₹1,499** (never waived)
**Net, steady state****₹6,301 — 1.5% of spend**

Plus ₹2 lakh of cyber fraud cover and the Paytm First membership, neither priced.

The Paytm Travel leg does the heavy lifting: ₹3,600 of the ₹7,800 comes from ₹72,000 of travel spend. Without meaningful Paytm Travel usage the card returns closer to 1.2%, and the unwaivable fee starts to bite.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Wallet loads — on any app**Plus a 1% load fee above ₹1,000
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983
**Cash advances**2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit: 1% reversed on transactions between ₹500 and ₹3,000, capped at ₹100 per statement cycle.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

SELECT vs the Standard Paytm SBI Card

CapsNoneNone
Welcome points—**₹750**
Cyber fraud cover₹1,00,000**₹2,00,000**
MilestonePaytm First renewal at ₹1 lakh**None**

The SELECT raises only the Paytm Travel rate — from 3% to 5%. Everything else is identical except the welcome points and doubled insurance.

Break-even on the ₹1,000 fee difference is straightforward: ₹1,000 ÷ 2% = ₹50,000 of annual Paytm Travel spend. Below that, the standard card is the better buy — and it keeps the milestone the SELECT drops.

Paytm SELECT vs PhonePe SELECT BLACK

Same ₹1,499 fee, same fintech co-brand idea, different structures.

**Paytm SBI Card SELECT**PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK
Fee waiver**None**₹3,00,000
Top rate5% (Paytm Travel)**10% (PhonePe bills)**
Caps₹750/month on the 5% band only₹4,500 a month ceiling
Base rate1%1% (capped)
Minimum transaction**None**₹100
LoungeNone4 domestic a year
Insurance**₹2 lakh cyber fraud**None

PhonePe's rates are higher, everything is capped and the fee is waivable. Paytm's top rate is capped too — at ₹750 a month — but its 2% and 1% bands are not, which favours a spender with broad Paytm-app usage rather than one concentrated in the 5% categories. The fee never goes away either way.

Is the Paytm SBI Card SELECT Worth It?

Yes, if you book travel through Paytm. 5% on movies, travel and mall purchases is a strong rate, but it is capped at ₹750 of value a month — ₹15,000 of qualifying spend — so it is worth at most ₹9,000 a year. Around ₹50,000 a year of qualifying spend justifies the step up from the standard card.

Yes, if your Paytm-app spending is broad. The 2% app band and the 1% base rate carry no published cap, which is unusual at ₹1,499 — only the 5% band is limited.

No, if your annual spend is under ₹1.5 lakh. With no fee waiver at any level and no milestone programme, the ₹1,499 is a fixed cost that has to be earned back every year.

No, if you mainly top up your Paytm wallet. Wallet loads earn nothing on any app and attract a 1% fee above ₹1,000.

Consider the standard Paytm SBI Card if your Paytm Travel spend is under ₹50,000 a year — same rates elsewhere, a third of the fee, and it keeps a milestone the SELECT drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the Paytm SBI Card SELECT? ₹1,499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. No spend-based fee reversal is published at any level for either Paytm card.

What is the reward rate? 5% on movies, travel and mall purchases through the Paytm app — capped at ₹750 of value a month — plus 2% on other Paytm app purchases and 1% on everything else, both uncapped. Points are worth ₹1 each, so these are true percentages.

Did the card used to pay cashback? Yes. With effect from 1 July 2024 the cashback was replaced by Reward Points at Re. 1 each. The percentages are unchanged; the mechanic is now a redeemable points balance.

Are wallet loads excluded? Yes — and SBI is explicit that this means wallet loads on any app, not just Paytm's. They also attract a 1% load fee above ₹1,000.

What insurance is included? ₹2,00,000 of cyber fraud cover — double the standard Paytm SBI Card's ₹1 lakh, and unusual among Indian cards, which more often cover lost-card liability than online fraud.

Is the SELECT worth ₹1,000 more than the standard Paytm SBI Card? Only if your annual Paytm Travel spend exceeds about ₹50,000. The SELECT raises only that rate, from 3% to 5%; everything else is identical apart from ₹750 of welcome points and the doubled cyber cover. The standard card also keeps a milestone the SELECT does not have.

Does the card offer lounge access? No. Neither Paytm SBI card has a lounge programme.

Is there a milestone benefit? No. The SELECT has no milestone programme. The standard Paytm SBI Card earns a Paytm First renewal voucher at ₹1 lakh of annual spend.
