IRCTC SBI Card Premier Review 2026: 10% Value Back on Rail, the Base-Fare Catch & FAQs
IRCTC SBI Card Premier costs ₹1,499 and pays up to 10% value back on AC rail tickets booked through IRCTC, 5% on air.irctc.co.in and 0.8% elsewhere — at Re. 1 a point. Welcome points exceed the fee. Full maths, conditions, fees and FAQs.
The IRCTC SBI Card Premier pays up to 10% value back on AC rail tickets booked through IRCTC, at Re. 1 a Reward Point — one of only two SBI programmes where a point is worth a full rupee rather than 25 paise. It costs ₹1,499, and the welcome benefit of 1,500 Reward Points is worth ₹1,500, so year one is free.
The 10% is real, but its conditions are tighter than the headline suggests, and this article works through each of them.

Eligibility Criteria
SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.
The 10% — Four Conditions That Matter
SBI's "up to 10% value back" is genuine, but it is narrower than it reads:
1. AC classes only. It applies to AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car tickets. Sleeper class and unreserved travel do not qualify.
2. Booked through IRCTC's app or website. A ticket bought at a station counter or through a third-party site does not earn the accelerated rate.
3. Calculated on the BASE FARE. This is the one that surprises people. The 10% is worked out on the booking base fare, not on the total you pay. Reservation charges, superfast surcharges, catering, GST and the IRCTC convenience fee are all outside the calculation. On a typical AC3 ticket the base fare is meaningfully less than the amount debited, so the effective return on your actual outlay is below 10%.
4. "Up to." SBI's own phrasing makes 10% a ceiling rather than a flat rate.
None of this makes the card bad — 10% on base fare is still the strongest rail benefit available in India. But budget for an effective rate in the region of 7–8% of what you actually pay, not 10%.
The 5% on air.irctc.co.in Comes With a Catch
The Premier adds a rate the Platinum does not have: 5% value back on air tickets booked through air.irctc.co.in.
SBI states the catch on the same page: air ticket bookings through that site attract 1.8% transaction charges. Net of those, the effective rate is closer to 3.2% — still decent, but not 5%. Compare that against booking the same flight on the airline's own site with a general-purpose card before assuming it is the better route.
The Second Accelerated Band
Also exclusive to the Premier: 3 Reward Points per ₹125 on dining and on utility bills paid by standing instruction — roughly 2.4% at Re. 1 a point.
Note the standing instruction condition on utilities. A one-off manual utility payment does not qualify; you have to set up the auto-debit.
Reward Structure
| Spend | Rate | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| **IRCTC rail, AC classes, booked on IRCTC** | **Up to 10%** on base fare | **None published** |
| air.irctc.co.in flight bookings | **5%** (≈3.2% net of 1.8% charges) | **750 RP / statement cycle** |
| Dining, utility standing instructions | 3 RP per ₹125 — **2.4%** | None published |
| Everything else (non-fuel retail) | 1 RP per ₹125 — **0.8%** | None published |
| Fuel, cash | **0%** | — |
The air ticket band is capped at 750 Reward Points in each monthly statement cycle — SBI's T&C states it outright. At 5% and Re. 1 a point that binds at just ₹15,000 of air spend a cycle, so the air benefit is worth at most ₹750 a month. No cap is published on the rail band, the dining and utility band or the base rate.
A 0.8% base rate is strong for this tier. Most SBI entry and mid cards pay 0.25% or 0.5% once their 4-points-to-a-rupee conversion is applied. Here a point is a rupee, so 1 point per ₹125 is genuinely 0.8%.
Redemption — Android Only
Points transfer to your IRCTC Loyalty account and are redeemed on the IRCTC website or the Android mobile app.
SBI states the Android restriction explicitly. iOS users have no in-app redemption route and must use the website. A small thing, but worth knowing before you build a habit around the app.
Welcome Benefit
1,500 Reward Points, worth ₹1,500, credited on payment of the first annual fee, within 45 days of the eligible transaction.
That exceeds the ₹1,499 fee, so year one is free for anyone who pays the fee and transacts. It is also the clearest corroboration that a point really is worth a rupee — SBI describes them as "1,500 reward points worth Rs. 1,500".
Railway Lounges, Not Airport Lounges
8 complimentary railway lounge accesses a year in India, subject to a quarterly maximum.
Read that carefully: these are railway station lounges, not airport lounges. Comparison tools that score "8 lounge visits" against airport-lounge cards will flatter this card considerably. For a rail traveller they are useful; for anyone else they are not a substitute for airport access.
There is no airport lounge access on this card.
No Fee Waiver, No Milestones
No spend-based fee reversal is published for either IRCTC card at any level. The ₹1,499 is payable every year.
There is also no milestone programme. The value is entirely in the rail rate, the base rate and the welcome points.
At Re. 1 a point, the fee is recovered by roughly ₹1,90,000 of general spend at 0.8%, or by about ₹20,000 of qualifying AC rail base fare at 10% — or a mix. For a regular rail traveller that is easy; for an occasional one it is not.
Worked Example
Illustrative, for a traveller taking four AC3 journeys a month:
| Category | Monthly spend | Rate | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRCTC AC rail tickets (base fare ~₹7,000 of ₹8,500 paid) | ₹8,500 | 10% of base fare | ₹700 |
| Dining and utility standing instructions | ₹6,000 | 2.4% | ₹144 |
| Everything else | ₹18,000 | 0.8% | ₹144 |
| Fuel | ₹1,500 | 0% | ₹0 |
| **Monthly total** | **₹34,000** | **₹988 — 2.9%** |
Annual tally:
| Reward Points earned | ₹11,856 |
|---|---|
| Welcome points (year one) | ₹1,500 |
| **Year-one total** | **₹13,356** |
| **Steady state** | **₹11,856** |
| Annual fee | **₹1,499** (never waived) |
| **Net, steady state** | **₹10,357 — 2.5% of spend** |
Plus 8 railway lounge visits.
Note the rail leg does most of the work: ₹8,400 of the ₹11,856. Strip out the rail travel and the card returns about ₹3,500 against a ₹1,499 fee — thin.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Note |
|---|---|
| **Fuel** | MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — SBI names it explicitly |
| **Cash spends** | Named explicitly alongside fuel |
The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit — but note SBI states it here without publishing a transaction band or a cap, which is unusual; every other card in its range publishes both.
SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps. That utility fee interacts with the 2.4% standing-instruction band: above ₹50,000 of utilities in a cycle you pay 1% to earn 2.4%.
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹1,499 + GST |
| Renewal fee | ₹1,499 + GST — **no spend-based reversal at any level** |
| Add-on card fee | Nil |
| Finance charge | 3.75% per month — **45% per annum** |
| Interest-free period | 20 to 50 days; none if any part of last month's bill is unpaid |
| Forex markup | 3.5% |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5%, minimum ₹500 |
| Railway booking fee | As prescribed by IRCTC / Indian Railways |
| Late payment | ₹100 to ₹1,300 by balance |
| Overlimit | 2.5%, minimum ₹600 |
| GST | 18% on all of the above |
Premier vs IRCTC SBI Platinum Card
| IRCTC SBI Platinum Card | **IRCTC SBI Card Premier** | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fee | ₹500 | ₹1,499 |
| IRCTC rail | Up to 10% | Up to 10% |
| air.irctc.co.in | — | **5%** (≈3.2% net) |
| Dining / utility SI | — | **2.4%** |
| Base rate | 0.8% | 0.8% |
| Welcome | 350 points (₹350) | **1,500 points (₹1,500)** |
| Railway lounge | 4 a year | **8 a year** |
| Fee waiver | None | None |
The rail rate is identical on both cards. The Premier adds the air and dining bands, doubles the railway lounge entitlement, and gives a welcome benefit that exceeds its own fee.
Break-even on the ₹1,000 fee difference is roughly ₹42,000 a year of dining and standing-instruction utility spend at 2.4% — or it is covered outright in year one by the larger welcome bonus. If you only travel by rail and spend little else on the card, the ₹500 Platinum is the better buy.
Is the IRCTC SBI Card Premier Worth It?
Yes, if you travel AC class by rail regularly. Up to 10% on base fare is the best rail benefit available in India, and the points are worth a full rupee each.
Yes in year one, for anyone. The 1,500 welcome points exceed the ₹1,499 fee.
Yes, if you have dining and standing-instruction utility spend. The 2.4% band is exclusive to the Premier and is what justifies the step up from the Platinum.
No, if you rarely travel by rail. With no fee waiver and no milestones, the 0.8% base rate has to carry a ₹1,499 fee alone — that needs ₹1.9 lakh of annual spend just to break even.
Don't count the lounges as airport access. They are railway station lounges.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee of the IRCTC SBI Card Premier? ₹1,499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. No spend-based fee reversal is published at any level for either IRCTC card.
Is the 10% value back real? Yes, but with four conditions: AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car only; booked through the IRCTC app or website; calculated on the booking base fare rather than the total paid; and "up to" 10% rather than a flat rate. Expect an effective 7–8% of your actual outlay.
What are the Reward Points worth? ₹1 each — SBI states it outright and the welcome benefit confirms it ("1,500 reward points worth Rs. 1,500"). The IRCTC cards are among the only SBI products where a point is worth a full rupee rather than ₹0.25.
Is the 5% on air.irctc.co.in worth using? Only up to a point — twice over. SBI notes that air bookings through that site attract 1.8% transaction charges, so the net rate is nearer 3.2%. And the band is capped at 750 Reward Points per monthly statement cycle, which binds at just ₹15,000 of air spend. Beyond ₹15,000 a month, book elsewhere.
How do I redeem? Points transfer to your IRCTC Loyalty account and are redeemed on the IRCTC website or the Android app. SBI states the Android restriction explicitly — there is no iOS in-app route.
Are the lounges at airports? No. The 8 complimentary accesses are railway station lounges. There is no airport lounge access on this card.
Is there a milestone programme? No. Neither IRCTC card has milestones. The value sits in the rail rate, the base rate and the welcome points.
Is the Premier worth ₹1,000 more than the Platinum? The rail rate is the same on both. The Premier adds 5% on air.irctc.co.in, 2.4% on dining and standing-instruction utilities, double the railway lounge access, and a welcome bonus that covers its own fee. If those bands fit your spending, yes; if you only book rail, the ₹500 Platinum is enough.
