At ₹500 a year, the IRCTC SBI Platinum Card is the cheapest card in SBI's range, and it pays up to 10% value back on AC rail tickets booked through IRCTC — the same headline rate as the ₹1,499 Premier. Reward Points here are worth ₹1 each, not the 25 paise most SBI cards pay.

Roughly ₹5,000 of qualifying rail base fare a year covers the fee. For anyone who takes even a few AC journeys, that is an easy bar.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment of income, credit history and internal scoring. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

The 10% — Four Conditions That Matter

SBI's "up to 10% value back" is genuine, but narrower than it reads:

1. AC classes only. It applies to AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car tickets. Sleeper and unreserved travel do not qualify.

2. Booked through IRCTC's app or website. A ticket bought at a station counter or via a third-party site earns the base rate instead.

3. Calculated on the BASE FARE. The one that catches people out. The 10% is worked out on the booking base fare, not the total debited. Reservation charges, superfast surcharges, catering, GST and the IRCTC convenience fee all sit outside the calculation. On a typical AC3 ticket the base fare is a good deal less than what leaves your account, so the effective return on your actual outlay is below 10%.

4. "Up to." SBI's phrasing makes 10% a ceiling, not a flat rate.

None of this undermines the card — 10% on base fare is still the strongest rail benefit in India. But budget for an effective 7–8% of what you actually pay.

Reward Structure

Everything else (non-fuel retail)1 RP per ₹125 — **0.8%****None published**
Fuel, cash**0%**—

No caps on either rate.

A 0.8% base rate is unusually strong for a ₹500 card. SimplySAVE, at the same price point, pays 0.17% outside its four categories; SimplyCLICK pays 0.25% offline. The difference is the point valuation — here a Reward Point is worth a full rupee, so 1 point per ₹125 really is 0.8%.

Redemption — Android Only

Points transfer to your IRCTC Loyalty account and are redeemed on the IRCTC website or the Android mobile app.

SBI states the Android restriction explicitly. iOS users have no in-app redemption route and must go through the website.

Welcome Benefit

350 activation bonus Reward Points, worth ₹350.

The conditions are specific: earned on a single transaction of ₹500 or more within 60 days of card issuance, with fuel and cash spends not counting, and credited within 45 days of the eligible transaction.

₹350 against a ₹500 fee covers most of year one. Note the Premier's welcome benefit of 1,500 points exceeds its own ₹1,499 fee outright — a better deal proportionally.

Railway Lounges, Not Airport Lounges

4 complimentary railway lounge accesses a year in India, subject to a quarterly maximum.

These are railway station lounges, not airport lounges. Comparison tools that read "4 lounge visits" against airport-lounge cards will flatter this card. For a rail traveller they are genuinely useful; for anyone else they are no substitute.

There is no airport lounge access on this card.

No Fee Waiver, No Milestones

No spend-based fee reversal is published for either IRCTC card at any level. The ₹500 is payable every year — though at ₹500 that is a low bar.

There is no milestone programme. The value sits entirely in the rail rate, the 0.8% base rate and the activation bonus.

Roughly ₹5,000 of qualifying AC rail base fare a year covers the fee, or about ₹62,500 of general spend at 0.8%. For a rail traveller the first route is trivial.

Worked Example

Illustrative, for a traveller taking two AC3 journeys a month:

CategoryMonthly spendRateValue
IRCTC AC rail tickets (base fare ~₹3,500 of ₹4,200 paid)₹4,20010% of base fare₹350
Everything else₹15,0000.8%₹120
Fuel₹1,5000%₹0
**Monthly total****₹20,700****₹470 — 2.27%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points earned₹5,640
Activation bonus (year one)₹350
**Year-one total****₹5,990**
**Steady state****₹5,640**
Annual fee**₹500** (never waived)
**Net, steady state****₹5,140 — 2.1% of spend**

Plus 4 railway lounge visits.

The rail leg carries the card: ₹4,200 of the ₹5,640. But even a light rail user — say ₹1,500 of base fare a month — takes ₹1,800 a year from the rail rate alone, more than three times the fee.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — SBI names it explicitly
**Cash spends**Named explicitly alongside fuel, and they also don't count towards the welcome bonus

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit — but SBI states it here without publishing a transaction band or a cap, which is unusual; every other card in its range publishes both.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

At a ₹500 fee the 45% finance charge deserves particular emphasis: revolving even a small balance costs far more than the card can return.

Platinum vs IRCTC SBI Card Premier

Annual fee₹500₹1,499

Fee waiverNoneNone

The rail rate — the reason to hold either card — is identical. The Premier adds an air band, a dining and utility band, double the railway lounge access, and a welcome bonus that covers its own fee.

Break-even on the ₹1,000 fee difference is roughly ₹42,000 a year of dining and standing-instruction utility spend at 2.4%. If rail is the only reason you want the card, the ₹500 Platinum gives you the whole benefit for a third of the price.

Is the IRCTC SBI Platinum Card Worth It?

Yes, for almost any AC-class rail traveller. At ₹500 with a 350-point activation bonus and up to 10% on rail base fare, the fee is recovered on about ₹5,000 of qualifying ticket spend a year.

Yes, for its base rate. 0.8% on everything, uncapped, in points worth ₹1 each, beats most SBI cards at this price — SimplySAVE pays 0.17% outside its four categories.

No, if you travel sleeper class or book at the counter. Neither earns the accelerated rate.

No, if you want airport lounge access. The four complimentary visits are railway station lounges.

Consider the Premier only if you would use its air, dining and utility bands — the rail benefit itself is the same on both cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the IRCTC SBI Platinum Card? ₹500 plus GST, on joining and renewal — the cheapest card in SBI's range. No spend-based fee reversal is published at any level.

Is the 10% value back real? Yes, subject to four conditions: AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car only; booked through the IRCTC app or website; calculated on the booking base fare rather than the total paid; and "up to" 10% rather than a flat rate. Expect roughly 7–8% of your actual outlay.

What are the Reward Points worth? ₹1 each — SBI states it outright. The IRCTC cards are among the only SBI products where a point is worth a full rupee rather than ₹0.25.

How do I get the welcome bonus? Make a single transaction of ₹500 or more within 60 days of card issuance. Fuel and cash spends do not count. The 350 points credit within 45 days.

How do I redeem? Points transfer to your IRCTC Loyalty account and are redeemed on the IRCTC website or the Android app. There is no iOS in-app route.

Are the lounges at airports? No. The four complimentary accesses are railway station lounges. There is no airport lounge access on this card.

Is there a milestone programme? No. Neither IRCTC card has milestones.

Should I get this or the Premier? The rail benefit is identical on both. Take the ₹500 Platinum unless you would also use the Premier's 5% air band, its 2.4% dining and utility band, or its doubled railway lounge access.
