SBI Card ELITE Review 2026: 5X Dining & Grocery Rewards, ₹6,000 Movie Benefit, Milestone Points, Fee
SBI Card ELITE review 2026 — 5X reward points on dining, grocery and departmental stores, ₹6,000 BookMyShow movie benefit, 50,000 milestone points, 1.99% forex markup, ₹4,999 annual fee and full charges explained.
The SBI Card ELITE is SBI Card's long-standing premium lifestyle card, built around three everyday categories — dining, grocery and departmental stores — plus a monthly movie benefit that quietly does most of the work of justifying its ₹4,999 fee. It suits someone who spends heavily on food and household shopping, watches movies regularly, and wants low-markup international usage. It is a poor fit for anyone hoping for travel-transferable points or a strong base reward rate.

Eligibility Criteria
- Age: 21 to 70 years (some sources cite 18 to 70).
- Residency: Indian resident.
- Income: SBI Card does not publish a formal threshold. Aggregators indicate roughly ₹60,000 per month for salaried applicants, or an ITR above ₹7.2 lakh per annum for the self-employed, with a credit score of 750 or above typically expected.
- Documents: PAN, Aadhaar or another government-approved photo ID, address proof, and the last three months' salary slips or bank statements as income proof.
Welcome Benefit
New cardholders become eligible for a welcome gift after the membership fee for the eligible year is paid. The gift is an e-Gift Voucher worth ₹5,000, chosen in multiples of ₹1,000 from a brand list that includes Yatra, Hush Puppies/Bata, Pantaloons, Aditya Birla Fashion and Shoppers Stop. Redemption happens through the Gyftr portal using the registered mobile number and an OTP, and the voucher link is sent to the registered email and mobile.
Two timing rules matter. The voucher must be redeemed within six months of receiving the communication, and no extension or post-redemption brand swap is entertained. Separately, cardholders receive a complimentary 1-year Club ITC Silver Tier membership, which becomes available after the first transaction within 60 days of card issuance. If you already hold the same or a higher Club ITC tier, no new membership is created.
Reward Structure: How You Earn
The card runs on a two-rate structure with a single shared monthly ceiling.
| Spend type | Reward Points | Value back |
|---|---|---|
| Dining, departmental stores, grocery | 10 RP per ₹100 (5X) | ≈2.5% |
| All other eligible spends, including international | 2 RP per ₹100 | ≈0.5% |
| Fuel and other excluded categories | Nil | 0% |
Reward Points are worth ₹0.25 each when redeemed against your outstanding card bill (4 RP = ₹1). There are no airline or hotel transfer partners, so this is the effective ceiling on point value.
The accelerated categories are defined by MCC, not by merchant name
The terms tie the 5X rate strictly to Merchant Category Codes assigned by Visa and Mastercard:
- Departmental Stores & Groceries: MCC 5311 (departmental stores), MCC 5411 (grocery stores and supermarkets)
- Dining: MCC 5812 (eating places and restaurants), MCC 5813 (drinking places), MCC 5814 (fast food restaurants)
A merchant that does not carry one of these codes earns the base rate, no matter how obviously "grocery" or "dining" the purchase feels. In practice this means Swiggy and Zomato food orders usually qualify under 5812, and quick-commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Zepto, BigBasket and Instamart usually qualify under 5411 — but classification is set by the merchant's acquirer and can change without notice.
The 10,000-point monthly cap
Accelerated Reward Points are capped at 10,000 RP per calendar month, cumulative across dining, departmental stores and grocery combined — not per category. Once you hit it, the terms are explicit that further accelerated-category spend continues to earn, but at the base rate of 2 RP per ₹100.
Worked example. The cap of 10,000 RP is reached at ₹1,00,000 of accelerated spend in a calendar month (₹1,00,000 ÷ 100 × 10 RP). Suppose you spend ₹1,50,000 across restaurants and supermarkets in a single month:
| Spend slice | Rate | Points |
|---|---|---|
| First ₹1,00,000 | 10 RP per ₹100 | 10,000 RP (cap reached) |
| Next ₹50,000 | 2 RP per ₹100 | 1,000 RP |
| **Total** | **11,000 RP = ₹2,750** |
The cap resets on the first of each calendar month, so splitting a large grocery or restaurant bill across a month boundary is worth planning if you regularly spend near ₹1 lakh in these categories.
Milestone Benefits
Milestone points are measured over the card anniversary year, defined from the date the card account was opened — not the financial year and not the calendar year. If your account opened on 1 October, your annual period runs 1 October to 30 September.
| Annual spend | Bonus Reward Points | Value |
|---|---|---|
| ₹3 lakh | 10,000 RP | ₹2,500 |
| ₹4 lakh | 10,000 RP | ₹2,500 |
| ₹5 lakh | 15,000 RP | ₹3,750 |
| ₹8 lakh | 15,000 RP | ₹3,750 |
| **Cumulative at ₹8 lakh** | **50,000 RP** | **₹12,500** |
Points are credited within a maximum of 21 days of hitting each slab, with a confirmation SMS to the registered mobile number.
A point of frequent confusion: SBI Card's own marketing graphic shows ₹10 lakh alongside these slabs, but ₹10 lakh is the annual fee reversal threshold, not a fifth points milestone. Reaching ₹10 lakh in net retail spends over the 365 days preceding the annual fee billing date reverses the ₹4,999 fee; it does not add points.
Spends that do not earn Reward Points — fuel, rent, wallet loads, cash advances, balance transfers, fees and charges, merchant EMI, Flexipay and government transactions — should not be assumed to count toward milestone spend either. The fee reversal itself is measured on net retail spends, which is retail spends minus reversals.
Other Benefits
Movie tickets — the standout perk. Book two or more tickets on www.bookmyshow.com, enter your SBI Card ELITE details, and select the SBI Card ELITE option under "Avail Offers". The amount payable drops by ₹500 or the cost of two tickets, whichever is lower, capped at two discounted tickets per month. That is ₹6,000 a year on a ₹4,999 fee, from primary cards only, with the convenience fee still payable by you. Note this is a flat discount, not a buy-one-get-one offer.
Domestic lounge access. Two complimentary visits per quarter, eight per year, delivered through the Visa, Mastercard, American Express or RuPay network lounge programmes on presentation of the card at the lounge terminal.
International lounge access. Complimentary Priority Pass membership worth USD 99, valid 24 months, giving 6 complimentary visits per calendar year outside India with a maximum of 2 per quarter. Two restrictions are easy to miss: complimentary Priority Pass visits apply only to lounges outside India, and only the primary cardholder is eligible. Beyond the complimentary quota, and for every guest, the charge is USD 27 plus taxes per visit, billed to your statement 60 to 120 days after the visit.
Forex. A 1.99% foreign currency markup, against the 3.5% SBI Card charges on most other cards. International spends also earn 2 Reward Points per ₹100.
Fuel surcharge waiver. 1% waiver on transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000 at all petrol pumps in India, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle. Taxes on the surcharge are not waived, and fuel spends earn no Reward Points.
ITC Hotels. Beyond the Club ITC Silver membership, cardholders get 25% off the second night of a minimum two-night stay booked on itchotels.com or the ITC Hotels app (Club ITC enrolment mandatory, room reservations only, not on EMI, blackout dates apply), and flat 20% off food orders above ₹3,000 excluding taxes through the ITC Hotels app.
Network-specific extras. The Mastercard variant carries golf privileges: 4 complimentary green fee rounds a year, up to 50% off golf games and one complimentary lesson per month at selected Indian courses. The American Express variant carries the richer offer set — up to 25% off at 500+ participating restaurants (most listed outlets at 15%, valid till 31 December 2026), Saturday-only instant discounts of ₹150 each on Zomato (above ₹600, code AMEXNETWORK), Blinkit (above ₹1,500, code AMEXWEEKEND), Swiggy Food (above ₹600, code AMEX125) and Swiggy Instamart (above ₹700), and Yatra discounts using code AMEXNET: 14% off domestic flights (max ₹2,025, min ₹5,000), 11% off international flights (max ₹7,000, min ₹15,000) and 25% off domestic hotels (max ₹7,500, min ₹5,000), each once per category per calendar month.
Other features. Fraud liability cover of ₹1 lakh, a concierge service covering online doctor consultation and flower and gift delivery, add-on cards at nil annual fee, contactless payments up to ₹5,000 without a PIN, Flexipay on transactions of ₹2,500 or more, and Balance Transfer on EMI.
Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn
Explicitly excluded in the card terms:
- Purchases at petrol pumps and service stations (MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983)
Excluded under SBI Card's wider rewards programme rules:
- Rent payments (which also attract a ₹199 processing fee)
- Wallet loads (also a 1% fee above ₹1,000 per transaction)
- Government transactions
- Cash advances and balance transfers
- Fees, charges and interest
- Merchant EMI and Flexipay conversions
Earns only the base rate, not 5X: any merchant outside MCC 5311, 5411, 5812, 5813 and 5814 — which includes most general e-commerce, travel bookings, insurance premiums, utilities, education payments and cinema box offices.
One structural limitation worth flagging: UPI linkage is available only on the RuPay Select variant. The Visa, Mastercard and American Express variants cannot be added to a UPI app at all.

Is the SBI Card ELITE Worth It?
The arithmetic works for a specific profile. Take a cardholder spending ₹5 lakh a year, with ₹15,000 a month in restaurants and supermarkets. The accelerated spend of ₹1.8 lakh returns roughly ₹4,500, the remaining ₹3.2 lakh at base returns about ₹1,600, milestones at ₹3, ₹4 and ₹5 lakh add 35,000 points worth ₹8,750, and full use of the movie benefit adds ₹6,000. That is close to ₹20,000 of value against a first-year outlay of about ₹5,900 including GST — a comfortable margin, and that is before the ₹5,000 welcome voucher.
Strip out the movie benefit and the milestones, though, and the card looks thin. A 0.5% base rate is poor for a ₹4,999 card, the 2.5% accelerated rate is beaten by several cards costing a fraction as much, a ₹99 fee applies every time you redeem, and points cap out at ₹0.25 with no transfer partners to squeeze more value from. The ₹10 lakh fee-waiver threshold is among the steepest in the market, and the Club Vistara Silver and Trident Red memberships that once made this a genuine traveller's card have both been withdrawn.
So: strong for the household spender who reliably crosses ₹5 lakh a year, eats out often, shops at supermarkets rather than marketplaces, and actually books two BookMyShow tickets a month. Weak for the casual spender, for anyone whose grocery shopping runs through Amazon or Flipkart rather than 5411-coded merchants, and for the points optimiser who wants airline transferability.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the annual fee of the SBI Card ELITE and can it be waived? The joining fee and the renewal fee are both ₹4,999 plus GST. The renewal fee is reversed if you record net retail spends of ₹10 lakh or more in the 365 days immediately preceding the annual fee billing date.
How much is one SBI Card ELITE Reward Point worth? Four Reward Points equal ₹1, so each point is worth ₹0.25 when redeemed against your outstanding card bill. Points can also go toward e-vouchers and catalogue products, but there is no airline or hotel transfer option.
Which categories earn 5X Reward Points? Dining, departmental stores and grocery — specifically merchants coded MCC 5311, 5411, 5812, 5813 and 5814. You earn 10 Reward Points per ₹100, roughly 2.5% back.
Is there a cap on the accelerated Reward Points? Yes. Accelerated points are capped at 10,000 Reward Points per calendar month, shared across all three categories combined. That equals about ₹1,00,000 of accelerated spend. Beyond the cap you continue to earn, but at 2 Reward Points per ₹100.
Do Swiggy and Zomato orders earn 5X? Usually, because food-delivery transactions in India typically settle under MCC 5812. Eligibility depends entirely on the code the merchant's acquirer assigns, and this can change without notice.
How does the movie benefit work? Book two or more tickets on www.bookmyshow.com, pay with the card, and apply the SBI Card ELITE offer under "Avail Offers". Your bill drops by ₹500 or the cost of two tickets, whichever is lower, for a maximum of two tickets a month — about ₹6,000 a year. Primary cards only, and the convenience fee is still yours to pay.
How many airport lounge visits do I get? Two complimentary domestic visits per quarter, eight a year. Internationally, complimentary Priority Pass membership gives 6 visits per calendar year outside India, capped at 2 per quarter.
Can I use the Priority Pass at lounges inside India? Not for free. The terms state that complimentary Priority Pass visits apply only to lounges outside India. Visits to Priority Pass lounges within India are chargeable at USD 27 plus taxes.
What is the foreign currency markup on this card? 1.99%, one of the lower markups in the Indian market and well below the 3.5% SBI Card applies to most of its other cards. The same 1.99% applies to dynamic currency conversion on transactions of ₹1,000 or more.
Which spends do not earn Reward Points? Fuel is excluded in the card terms. SBI Card's wider programme rules also exclude rent, wallet loads, government transactions, cash advances, balance transfers, fees and charges, merchant EMI and Flexipay.
When do my Reward Points expire? Reward Points are valid for 24 months from accrual and are forfeited on the last day of the 24th month if unredeemed. A ₹99 redemption fee applies to statement credit, physical products and physically dispatched vouchers.
Which network variant should I choose? It depends on what you use. The American Express variant carries the richest offer set (500+ restaurant discounts, Saturday Swiggy/Zomato/Blinkit offers, Yatra discounts) but has narrower acceptance. Mastercard carries the golf privileges. RuPay Select is the only variant that can be linked to UPI. Visa offers the broadest acceptance with the fewest extras.
Are the Club Vistara and Trident memberships still offered? No. Both the Club Vistara Silver Tier and Trident Red Tier memberships that were once bundled with this card have been discontinued.
