BPCL SBI Card Review 2026: 4.25% Value Back on Fuel, the ₹10,000 Cap, Fees & FAQs
BPCL SBI Card costs ₹499 and returns 4.25% value back at BPCL pumps — 3.25% in Reward Points plus a 1% surcharge waiver. Full reward maths, the monthly cap that binds at ₹10,000, fees and FAQs.
The BPCL SBI Card is a ₹499 fuel co-brand built around one number: 4.25% value back at BPCL petrol pumps. That number is real, but it is two benefits added together, it only applies at BPCL, and it stops at ₹10,000 of fuel spend a month. Understand those three things and the card is easy to judge — it suits someone who fills up at a Bharat Petroleum pump, spends roughly ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a month on fuel, and would otherwise earn nothing on it.

Eligibility Criteria
SBI Card does not publish an age or income threshold for this card. Approval rests on the bank's own assessment of your income, credit history and internal score. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required, as with any SBI credit card. Add-on cards are free and can be issued to parents, a spouse, children or siblings aged 18 and above.
The 4.25% Explained Properly
SBI's own footnote spells out the arithmetic, and it is worth reproducing because the headline number is a sum, not a rate:
4.25% Value Back — 13X Reward Points equivalent to 3.25% + 1% Fuel surcharge waiver on every transaction of up to Rs. 4,000, exclusive of GST and other charges, at any BPCL petrol pump across the country.
Two separate mechanisms:
1. 13X Reward Points = 3.25%. Thirteen times the base rate of 1 Reward Point per ₹100 gives 13 points per ₹100. At 4 points to the rupee, that is ₹3.25 back per ₹100 — 3.25%.
2. A 1% fuel surcharge waiver. Every fuel transaction in India carries a 1% surcharge levied by the acquiring bank. This card reverses it on BPCL transactions up to ₹4,000, with no minimum threshold. You are not earning 1% — you are avoiding a charge you would otherwise pay.
They are added together for marketing and they are genuinely both real, but they have different limits, which is where people get caught out.
The Cap That Binds: 1,300 Points a Statement Cycle
The accelerated fuel rate is capped at 1,300 Reward Points per statement cycle. At 13 points per ₹100, that is reached at exactly ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel spend in a cycle.
Past ₹10,000, fuel earns nothing — not the base rate, nothing, because fuel outside the accelerated programme is excluded from Reward Points on every SBI card. The surcharge waiver continues, since it works per transaction rather than per cycle, but the points stop.
| Monthly BPCL fuel spend | Reward Points | Points value | + 1% waiver | Total value back |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | 650 | ₹162.50 | ₹50 | ₹212.50 — **4.25%** |
| ₹10,000 | 1,300 | ₹325 | ₹100 | ₹425 — **4.25%** |
| ₹15,000 | 1,300 (capped) | ₹325 | ₹150 | ₹475 — **3.17%** |
| ₹20,000 | 1,300 (capped) | ₹325 | ₹200 | ₹525 — **2.63%** |
The card is at its best at exactly ₹10,000 a month of fuel. Above that the effective rate falls away steadily.
Where the Accelerated Rate Does and Doesn't Apply
Only at BPCL. This is the single most important limitation and the easiest to overlook. Fill up at a Shell, HP or Indian Oil pump and you earn nothing — not 13X, not the base rate. SBI identifies BPCL outlets from a merchant-ID list which its T&C says is updated "on a best effort basis", so a newly opened BPCL pump may not register immediately.
POS swipe only for the surcharge waiver. SBI restricts the 1% waiver to card swipes at the pump's POS machine.
Mobile wallet uploads earn nothing. SBI names this explicitly alongside non-BPCL fuel.
The Second Rate: 1.25% on Everyday Categories
Beyond fuel, the card earns 5 Reward Points per ₹100 — 1.25% — on four categories:
| Category | MCC | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Dining | 5812, 5813, 5814 | 1.25% |
| Departmental stores | 5311 | 1.25% |
| Grocery and supermarkets | 5411 | 1.25% |
| Movies | 7832 | 1.25% |
| Everything else | — | 0.25% |
This band is capped at 5,000 Reward Points a month, shared across all four categories, which binds at ₹1,00,000 of such spend — high enough that most cardholders will never reach it.
A word on how categories are decided: the rate follows the merchant's MCC, assigned by the card network, not by what the shop sells. A restaurant billed under a hotel's code will not earn the dining rate.
Welcome Benefit
2,000 bonus Reward Points, worth ₹500. Credited only after the joining fee has been paid and realised by SBI Card — not on approval. On the fee alone, ₹500 of points covers the ₹499 joining fee in year one.
Usefully, Reward Points on this card can be redeemed against fuel at BPCL outlets, as well as through the Shop & Smile catalogue. That fuel redemption is unusual and makes the points considerably more liquid for the card's intended user than a catalogue-only currency would be.
Worked Example
Illustrative, at ₹32,000 a month of spend:
| Category | Monthly spend | Points | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPCL fuel | ₹8,000 | 1,040 | ₹260 |
| Grocery and departmental | ₹10,000 | 500 | ₹125 |
| Dining and movies | ₹4,000 | 200 | ₹50 |
| Everything else | ₹10,000 | 100 | ₹25 |
| **Total points** | **₹32,000** | **1,840** | **₹460** |
| 1% fuel surcharge waiver | ₹80 | ||
| **Total value back** | **₹540 — 1.69%** |
Over a year that is ₹6,480 against a ₹499 fee — and the fee itself is reversed at ₹1 lakh of annual spend, which this example clears comfortably.
Fee Reversal: The Threshold Doubled in 2026
The renewal fee is reversed on ₹1,00,000 of annual spend. This changed with effect from 1 May 2026 — the threshold was previously ₹50,000, so older reviews and comparison sites still quote the lower figure. At ₹1 lakh a year, or roughly ₹8,400 a month across all categories, most regular users of the card will clear it.
Where You Won't Earn
| Excluded | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| **Non-BPCL fuel** | The card's whole proposition is BPCL-specific |
| **Mobile wallet uploads** | MCC 6540, 6541 — and a 1% load fee applies above ₹1,000 |
| **Cash advances** | Plus 2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, and interest from day one |
Note also the separate transaction fees SBI levies across its range, which apply here: ₹199 on every rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments made through third-party apps (direct payments to a school or college attract nothing).
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹499 + GST |
| Renewal fee | ₹499 + GST, reversed at ₹1,00,000 annual spend |
| Add-on card fee | Nil |
| Finance charge | 3.75% per month — **45% per annum** |
| Interest-free period | 20 to 50 days, and none at all if any part of last month's bill is unpaid |
| Forex markup | 3.5% |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5%, minimum ₹500 |
| Late payment | ₹100 to ₹1,300 by balance, plus ₹100 more if the minimum due is missed twice running |
| Overlimit | 2.5%, minimum ₹600 |
| Reward redemption fee | ₹99 on physical products, statement credit and physically-sent vouchers |
| GST | 18% on all of the above |
The 45% annual finance charge is the number to respect. It dwarfs anything the card returns — a single revolved balance wipes out a year of fuel rewards.
Is the BPCL SBI Card Worth It?
Yes, if you fill up at BPCL, spend ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a month on fuel, and currently earn nothing on it. At ₹10,000 a month you take ₹425 of value against a ₹499 annual fee that is itself reversed at ₹1 lakh of spend. The maths is straightforward and the benefit is real.
No, if you are loyal to a different fuel brand, spend far more than ₹10,000 a month on fuel (the cap makes the card progressively worse), or want a general-purpose card — the 0.25% base rate is among the weakest available, and there is no lounge access, no insurance and no milestone programme.
Consider the OCTANE instead if your fuel spend is high and steady. The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE costs ₹1,499 and pays 25X instead of 13X — 7.25% value back — with the cap raised in proportion, so it binds at the same ₹10,000 a month. It also adds four domestic lounge visits a year, ₹1 lakh of fraud liability cover and a ₹2,000 voucher at ₹3 lakh of annual spend. The extra ₹1,000 of fee buys ₹300 a month more on fuel alone at full usage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the annual fee of the BPCL SBI Card? ₹499 plus GST, both as a joining fee and on renewal. The renewal fee is reversed if your annual spend in the previous year reached ₹1,00,000 — raised from ₹50,000 with effect from 1 May 2026.
Is the 4.25% value back real? Yes, but it is two things added together: 3.25% in Reward Points (13X) and a 1% fuel surcharge waiver. Both apply at BPCL pumps on transactions up to ₹4,000, and the points half stops at 1,300 Reward Points a statement cycle.
How much fuel spend does the cap allow? ₹10,000 per statement cycle. At 13 Reward Points per ₹100 you reach the 1,300-point ceiling exactly there. Beyond it, fuel earns no points at all, though the 1% surcharge waiver continues per transaction.
Do I earn rewards at non-BPCL petrol pumps? No. Fuel is excluded from the Reward Points programme across SBI's range; the BPCL co-brand carves out an exception for BPCL outlets only. A Shell or HP fill-up earns nothing and gets no surcharge reversal.
What are Reward Points worth? ₹0.25 each — 4 points redeem against ₹1. On this card they can be used against fuel at BPCL outlets as well as through the Shop & Smile catalogue. A ₹99 redemption fee applies to physical products, statement credit and physically-sent vouchers.
Does the card come with lounge access? No. The standard BPCL SBI Card has no lounge programme. The OCTANE variant includes four complimentary domestic visits a calendar year.
Is there a minimum transaction for the surcharge waiver? No. SBI states "No Minimum Threshold" for the BPCL fuel surcharge waiver — it applies on transactions up to ₹4,000, and only on a POS swipe.
