The Apollo SBI Card is a ₹499 healthcare co-brand paying 3% across all Apollo services, 2% on dining and entertainment, 1% on beauty and wellness and 0.5% on everything else — at Re. 1 a Reward Point. The fee is reversed at ₹1 lakh of annual spend. Only the Apollo band is capped, at 5,000 Reward Points a statement cycle, which binds at ₹1,66,667 of Apollo spend.

Its best feature is not a rate at all: points redeem instantly at Apollo point-of-sale terminals, which is unusually liquid for an Indian co-brand.

Eligibility Criteria

SBI Card publishes no age or income threshold. Approval rests on its own assessment of income, credit history and internal scoring. Indian residency and a valid PAN are required. Add-on cards are free.

Points are worth ₹1 each — SBI states it outright, and the welcome benefit corroborates it ("500 Reward points worth Rs. 500"). That makes an Apollo Reward Point worth four times an ordinary SBI Reward Point, which is redeemed at ₹0.25.

The Apollo band is capped at 5,000 Reward Points per statement cycle, after which the base rate of 1 Reward Point per ₹200 applies. At 3 points per ₹100 that binds at ₹1,66,667 of Apollo spend a cycle — so it will rarely bite in practice, and it is far less restrictive than the SELECT's identical 5,000-point cap, which binds at just ₹50,000 because that card earns 10 points per ₹100.

The lifestyle band — dining, movies and entertainment — has no published cap on this card, which is a genuine advantage over the SELECT, where the equivalent band is capped at 5,000 points a cycle.

The 3% covers the whole Apollo group

This is the standard card's structural advantage over the SELECT and it is easy to miss. SBI's wording here is "all Apollo services" — Apollo 24|7, Apollo Pharmacy, Apollo Hospitals, Apollo Diagnostics, Apollo Consult, Apollo Labs and Apollo White Dental.

The SELECT's headline 10% is narrower: Apollo 24|7 and Apollo Pharmacy only. A hospital bill or a diagnostics package earns 3% on this ₹499 card and 0.5% on the ₹1,499 SELECT. If your Apollo exposure is mostly hospitals or tests rather than the 24|7 app, the cheaper card is the better card.

Mind the ₹200 base denominator

The base rate is 1 Reward Point per ₹200 while all three accelerated bands are per ₹100. That is easy to misread as the same denominator:

  • Base: 1 point per ₹200 = 0.5%
  • Beauty and wellness: 1 point per ₹100 = 1% — double the base, not the same

Instant Redemption at Apollo Tills

Points redeem instantly at Apollo point-of-sale terminals — you hand over the card, the points apply, done. They can also be converted into Apollo Health Credits.

Most Indian co-brands require a portal request and a waiting period. This card does not, which makes its points considerably more useful in practice than the rate alone suggests.

It is also more liquid than the SELECT, which can only convert to Health Credits and only through the SBI Card app or website.

The "Up to 10% Instant Discount" — Treat as a Ceiling

SBI advertises "up to 10% Instant Discount on select Apollo services".

Read "up to" as a ceiling rather than a rate. SBI publishes neither the qualifying service list nor any cap on the captured pages. It may be worth a great deal or very little depending on what you buy and when — check the current offer terms at the point of purchase rather than planning around a 10% figure.

Welcome Benefit

  • 500 Reward Points, worth ₹500, on payment of the joining fee — the fee back in year one
  • Complimentary Apollo Gold Tier membership, which SBI does not price

No Milestones, No Lounge, No Insurance

Worth stating plainly. The card has no milestone programme, no lounge access and no insurance. The only anniversary-year benefit is the fee reversal at ₹1 lakh of annual spend — about ₹8,400 a month, easily cleared by anyone using it regularly.

This is a single-purpose card: earn well at Apollo, redeem instantly at Apollo, pay nothing for the privilege.

Worked Example

Illustrative, at ₹25,000 a month — ₹3 lakh a year, comfortably clearing the fee reversal:

CategoryMonthly spendRatePointsValue
Apollo — pharmacy, diagnostics, consults₹5,0003%150₹150
Dining, movies, entertainment₹5,0002%100₹100
Salon, spa, beauty services₹2,0001%20₹20
Everything else₹11,0000.5%55₹55
Fuel₹2,0000%0₹0
**Monthly total****₹25,000****325****₹325 — 1.3%**

Annual tally:

Reward Points earned₹3,900
Welcome points (year one)₹500
**Year-one total****₹4,400**
**Steady state****₹3,900**
Annual fee**₹0** (reversed at ₹1 lakh)
**Effective return****1.3% of spend**

Plus the Apollo Gold Tier membership and whatever the instant-discount offer delivers, neither priced.

A 1.3% net return on a free card is solid for the entry tier — and the points are spendable at an Apollo till without a redemption request.

Where You Won't Earn

ExcludedNote
**Fuel**MCC 5172, 5541, 5542, 5983 — SBI's base-rate wording is "other **non-fuel** retail purchases"
**Cash advances**2.5% fee, minimum ₹500, interest from day one

The fuel surcharge waiver is the whole fuel benefit — though note SBI states it here without publishing a transaction band or a cap, which is unusual; every other card in its range publishes both. Assume the standard ₹500–₹3,000 band and ₹100 cycle cap unless the terms say otherwise.

SBI's range-wide transaction fees apply: ₹199 per rent payment, 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000, 1% on utility payments once the cycle total passes ₹50,000, and 1% on education payments through third-party apps.

Break-even on the ₹1,000 fee difference is roughly ₹15,000 of annual Apollo 24|7 spend, where the SELECT's extra 7 percentage points repay the gap.

But the cheaper card wins outright in three situations: if your Apollo spend is mostly hospitals or diagnostics (3% here, 0.5% there), if you want instant POS redemption rather than Health-Credits-only, and if you spend on beauty and wellness, which the SELECT does not reward at all.

Is the Apollo SBI Card Worth It?

Yes, for almost any regular Apollo customer. At ₹499 reversed from ₹1 lakh, with ₹500 of welcome points, 3% across the whole Apollo group and instant redemption at the till, the card costs nothing and returns real money. The 5,000-point cycle cap binds at ₹1,66,667 of Apollo spend, so it will rarely bite.

Yes, if your Apollo spend is hospital or diagnostics-led. The 3% covers those; the SELECT's 10% does not.

Yes, for its generous cap structure. Only the Apollo band is capped, and at ₹1,66,667 of Apollo spend a cycle it is far looser than the SELECT's identical cap, which binds at ₹50,000. The dining, beauty and base rates carry no published cap at all.

No, as a primary card. A 0.5% base rate on a ₹200 denominator means general spending earns little, and there is no lounge access, insurance or milestone programme.

Consider the SELECT if you spend more than about ₹15,000 a year at Apollo 24|7 or Apollo Pharmacy specifically — but check first that the credits will actually be spent, since the SELECT's points convert to nothing else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the annual fee of the Apollo SBI Card? ₹499 plus GST, on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed at ₹1,00,000 of annual spend.

What is the reward rate? 3% across all Apollo services, 2% on dining, movies and entertainment, 1% on beauty and wellness services, and 0.5% on everything else. The Apollo band is capped at 5,000 Reward Points per statement cycle — binding at ₹1,66,667 of Apollo spend — after which the base rate applies. The other bands have no published cap.

What are the points worth? ₹1 each — SBI states it outright, and the welcome benefit confirms it. That is four times an ordinary SBI Reward Point, which redeems at ₹0.25.

How do I redeem? Instantly at Apollo point-of-sale terminals — no portal request, no waiting. Points can also be converted into Apollo Health Credits.

Does the 3% cover Apollo Hospitals? Yes. SBI's wording is "all Apollo services", which includes hospitals, diagnostics, consults, labs and dental as well as Apollo 24|7 and Apollo Pharmacy. The SELECT variant's 10% is narrower.

What is the "up to 10% instant discount"? An offer on select Apollo services. "Up to" makes it a ceiling rather than a rate, and SBI publishes neither the qualifying service list nor any cap — check the current terms at the point of purchase.

Is there a lounge benefit or insurance? No. The card has no lounge access, no insurance and no milestone programme. The fee reversal at ₹1 lakh is its only anniversary-year benefit.

Why is the base rate only 0.5%? Because it accrues per ₹200 while the accelerated bands accrue per ₹100. One point per ₹200 at Re. 1 a point is 0.5%.
