The RBL Nova earns 4 Reward Points per ₹200 at ₹1 a point — a clean 2% — and carries what is probably the strongest milestone in the entire RBL range: a ₹10,000 gift card for every calendar quarter in which you spend ₹3 lakh.

Repeated all four quarters that is ₹40,000 a year against a ₹12,500 fee.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

RBL values a Reward Point at ₹0.25 — its own working figure, stated on its product pages as 'For calculation purpose, we have assumed value of 1 Reward Point = INR 0.25'. That is the bank's assumption rather than a published redemption table, and several RBL cards use a different value entirely, so check the card before comparing point counts across the range.

Nova is one of the exceptions: RBL states '1 Reward Point = INR 1 redemption value' on this card's page. That is why 4 points per ₹200 reads as 2% rather than 0.5%.

4 Reward Points per ₹200 — 2%. 12 Reward Points per ₹200 on accelerated categories — 6%.

RBL stopped paying rewards on a whole block of categories on 13 November 2023 — Fuel & Auto, Utilities, Insurance, Quasi-Cash, Real Estate and Rental, Education, and Wallets. The same list is excluded from milestone spend, so you cannot reach a milestone on utility or insurance spending on any RBL card.

SpendEffective rate
Accelerated categories**6.0%**
Everything else2.0%
Fuel, rent, wallet loads, government, gaming**0%**

The accelerated category list is not published. RBL states the 12-point rate but never says what qualifies for it, so the 6% cannot be planned around or attached to any merchant category.

The 2% forex markup is the second-lowest in the RBL range, behind only the four zero-markup cards.

RBL rounds down on every transaction, not cumulatively. Its terms say a transaction 'will not earn Reward Points for the residual amount' — so at 1 point per ₹100 a ₹350 spend earns 3 points and the ₹50 is lost, and lost again on the next transaction. Across many small purchases that quietly erodes the headline rate.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn

  • Where you earn nothing: Earns nothing at all: Fuel & Auto, Utilities, Insurance, Quasi-Cash, Real Estate and Rental, Education, and Wallets and Service Providers — RBL's own category list, excluded from earning AND from milestone spend calculation, with effect from 13 November 2023. Railways and Government are excluded on some cards additionally. Base Reward Points are also NOT accrued on EMI conversion of retail transactions, including Split-N-Pay and EMI requests placed at the point of sale.
  • Point expiry: Reward Points expire after the validity period RBL prescribes and are forfeited on card closure. Points transferred to a partner programme are governed by that programme's expiry rules, not RBL's.

Is the RBL Bank Nova Credit Card Worth It?

The quarterly milestone is the card. ₹3 lakh in a calendar quarter earns a ₹10,000 gift card of your choice, and it repeats. Sustain ₹1 lakh a month and you collect ₹40,000 a year — more than three times the fee, before counting any points.

Miss the quarter and you get nothing for it. There is no partial credit, so spending that straddles a quarter boundary is wasted. Watch the calendar, not the anniversary.

A 2% base rate in a ₹1 currency is genuinely strong and puts Nova ahead of most of the RBL range on everyday spending.

The ₹10 lakh fee waiver is demanding and excludes the whole fuel, utilities, insurance, rent, education and wallet block — so it must be cleared on discretionary retail.

The ₹99 redemption fee is waived, which matters on a card whose points you will actually redeem.
