Kotak Zen Credit Card Review 2026: 10 Zen Points on Shopping, the 6,500-Point Cap & FAQs
The Kotak Zen pays 10 Zen Points per ₹150 on shopping — apparel, lifestyle goods, departmental stores and jewellery — and 5 per ₹150 on everything else. At ₹0.25 a point that is 1.67% and 0.83%, which is genuinely good for a ₹1,500 card.
Then there is the cap, and it is the thing to understand before anything else: 6,500 points per billing cycle across ALL transactions combined. Not per category. The card's maximum earn is ₹1,625 a month.
Kotak Zen Quick Overview
| **Card type** | Shopping and travel card |
|---|---|
| **Joining / annual fee** | ₹1,500 + GST. Annual fee waived on **₹1.5 lakh** of retail spend |
| **Network** | Visa |
| **Shopping rate** | **1.67%** — 10 Zen Points per ₹150 |
| **Base rate** | 0.83% — 5 Zen Points per ₹150 |
| **Monthly cap** | **6,500 points across all transactions combined** |
| **Point value** | ₹0.25 catalogue / ₹0.20 cash |
| **Welcome** | 1,500 Zen Points (₹375) on paying the joining fee |
| **Milestones** | 7,500 points at ₹3 lakh + 7,500 more at ₹6 lakh |
| **Lounge** | 2 domestic/quarter (gated) + 3 international/year |
The cap is the card
The card page states it without qualification: "The reward points earned on all transactions will be capped at 6,500 points per billing cycle."
All transactions. Shopping, base spend, capped categories — everything draws on one pool.
Where it binds:
| If you only spend on… | Cap binds at |
|---|---|
| Shopping (10 points/₹150) | **₹97,500** a cycle |
| Base categories (5 points/₹150) | **₹1,95,000** a cycle |
So the card's maximum monthly earn is 6,500 points, or ₹1,625 at the catalogue rate. That's ₹19,500 a year if you fill the cap every single month — which itself requires ₹97,500 of shopping spend a month.
For most holders the cap won't bind. For a heavy shopper it will, and hard.
(Kotak doesn't publish what accrues past the cap. This review assumes nothing does, which is the conservative reading.)
Reward Structure
| Spend | Zen Points per ₹150 | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| **Shopping** — apparels, lifestyle goods, departmental stores, jewellery | 10 | **1.67%** |
| All other spends | 5 | **0.83%** |
| Excluded categories | 0 | 0% |
What a point is worth: ₹0.25 on the Kotak Rewards catalogue, ₹0.20 in cash since 1 June 2025. Catalogue redemption has no minimum; cashback through the Kotak Rewards portal needs 4,000 Kotak Rewards, or 4,000 points through the contact centre, and cash value redemption needs 2,000 points.
Welcome Benefit
1,500 Zen Points, credited only on payment of the ₹1,500 joining fee. Not available on the free variant.
At ₹0.25 a point that's ₹375 — a quarter of the fee back, not the whole thing. The headline number and the actual value are different things here.
Milestones — and these ones do add up
| Annual spend | Bonus Zen Points | Value |
|---|---|---|
| ₹3,00,000 | 7,500 | ₹1,875 |
| ₹6,00,000 | A further 7,500 | ₹1,875 |
| **Total at ₹6 lakh** | **15,000** | **₹3,750** |
Kotak's wording is "Earn 7500 Zen points on annual spends of ₹3,00,000 and additional 7500 Zen points on annual spends of ₹6,00,000" — additive, unlike the Royale Signature's "OR" structure.
₹3,750 against a ₹1,500 fee that waives at ₹1.5 lakh anyway is a solid return for spend you'd be making regardless.
The June 2025 category changes
| Category | Zen Points earned up to |
|---|---|
| Education and insurance | **₹70,000** per statement cycle each |
| Utility | **₹50,000** per statement cycle |
| Government | **₹40,000** per statement cycle |
| **Wallet load, fuel, rent, online skill-based gaming** | **Nothing at any level** |
Plus transactions converted to EMI, which earn nothing.
Kotak also confirms these categories are excluded from the milestone calculation — so utility and insurance spend won't help you reach ₹3 lakh.
Lounge Access
| Entitlement | Gate | |
|---|---|---|
| **Domestic** | 2 visits per quarter | **₹75,000 spend in the previous calendar quarter** |
| **International** | 3 visits per calendar year, via Priority Pass at 1,300+ lounges | **None** |
The domestic gate came in on 1 June 2025. A new cardholder gets nothing domestically in their first quarter, and any quarter below ₹75,000 costs the following quarter's visits.
The three international visits are not gated and can all be taken in the same quarter. International lounges are accessed by presenting the credit card itself.
Fees and Charges
| Charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Joining / annual fee | ₹1,500 + GST each — annual waived on **₹1,50,000** of retail spend |
| Add-on card | **Waived** |
| Finance charges | 3.75% per month (45% per annum) |
| Interest-free period | Up to 51 days |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5% of the amount, minimum ₹500 |
| Forex markup | **3.50%** |
| Dynamic currency conversion | 3.50% |
| Late payment | Nil up to ₹100, rising in slabs to ₹1,300 above ₹50,000 |
| Over-limit | ₹500 |
| Rent payment fee | 1% + GST on MCC 6513 |
| Utility fee | 1% above ₹50,000 per statement cycle |
| Fuel fee | 1% above ₹35,000 per statement cycle |
| Fuel surcharge waiver | 1% on ₹500–₹5,000, capped at ₹3,500 an anniversary year |
| Railway surcharge waiver | 1.8% / 2.5%, capped at ₹500 an anniversary year |
The 3.50% forex markup is poor on a card that carries international Priority Pass lounge access. Spend ₹1 lakh abroad and the markup costs ₹3,500 — roughly what both milestones combined pay.
Both surcharge waivers apply, which is standard for Kotak's mid tier.
Worked Example
A cardholder spending ₹6 lakh a year, with ₹2 lakh on shopping:
| Source | Spend | Points | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping at 10/₹150 | ₹2,00,000 | 13,333 | ₹3,333 |
| Other eligible at 5/₹150 | ₹4,00,000 | 13,333 | ₹3,333 |
| Milestones at ₹3L and ₹6L | — | 15,000 | ₹3,750 |
| Welcome (year one) | — | 1,500 | ₹375 |
| **Total (year one)** | **₹6,00,000** | **43,166** | **₹10,791** |
That's 1.8% — and the cap doesn't bind, because ₹50,000 a month of total spend generates about 3,600 points against a 6,500 ceiling.
Double the spend to ₹12 lakh and you'd start hitting the cap in heavy months, so the marginal rate falls.
Who Should Get the Kotak Zen
Good fit if:
- You spend meaningfully on apparel, jewellery, departmental stores and lifestyle goods — that's the 1.67% band
- Your monthly spend sits comfortably below the 6,500-point cap (roughly ₹1 lakh a month of shopping, or ₹2 lakh of base spend)
- You can reach ₹3 lakh a year for the first milestone, ideally ₹6 lakh for both
- You spend ₹75,000 a quarter consistently, so the domestic lounge access materialises
- You redeem on the catalogue rather than for cash
Look elsewhere if:
- You're a very heavy shopper — the card-wide cap means everything past ₹97,500 of shopping in a cycle earns nothing
- You spend abroad — 3.50% forex undoes the earn rate
- Your spend is concentrated in utilities, insurance, government or fuel — capped or zeroed, and excluded from milestones
- You always take cash redemptions — every figure here drops 20%
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the fee? ₹1,500 + GST for both joining and annual, with the annual fee waived on ₹1.5 lakh of retail spend.

What counts as "shopping"? Apparels, lifestyle goods, departmental stores and jewellery. Kotak names the categories without publishing the MCC list, so the exact boundary — particularly around "lifestyle goods" — is a judgement call.

What's the welcome benefit really worth? 1,500 Zen Points is ₹375 at the catalogue rate, and it's credited only if you pay the ₹1,500 joining fee. It isn't available on the free variant.
Are the milestones additive? Yes — 7,500 points at ₹3 lakh and a further 7,500 at ₹6 lakh, for 15,000 total (₹3,750).
How do I get domestic lounge access? Spend ₹75,000 or more in a calendar quarter to unlock 2 visits in the next quarter. The 3 international visits a year aren't gated.
Which categories earn nothing? Wallet loading, fuel, rent, online skill-based gaming and EMI conversions. Utility, education, insurance and government earn up to per-cycle caps.
Is there a fuel surcharge waiver? Yes — 1% on ₹500–₹5,000 transactions, capped at ₹3,500 an anniversary year, plus a railway waiver capped at ₹500.
