Kotak Air+ Credit Card Review 2026: Air Miles on Unbox Travel, 2% Forex, Lounge Access, Fees & FAQs
Kotak Air+ charges ₹3,000 and pays 5 Air Miles per ₹100 on Kotak Unbox flight and hotel bookings, 2% everywhere else, with a 2% forex markup and Priority Pass. Full earn maths, exclusions, fees and FAQs.
The Kotak Air+ Credit Card is a ₹3,000 travel card with an unusually clean reward currency: 1 Air Mile equals ₹1 against a flight or hotel booking on Kotak Unbox, so every rate reads straight across as a percentage. It also carries one of the lowest forex markups in the market at 2%. The catch is the one most reviews miss — this card earns nothing at all on international transactions, which makes that 2% markup far less useful than it first appears.
Kotak Air+ Quick Overview
| **Card type** | Travel rewards card |
|---|---|
| **Best for** | Travellers who book through Kotak Unbox and want lounge access |
| **Joining / annual fee** | ₹3,000 + GST, same on renewal. Annual fee waived on ₹4 lakh of eligible spend in an anniversary year |
| **Network** | Visa |
| **Top reward rate** | 5% — 5 Air Miles per ₹100 on Kotak Unbox flight and hotel bookings |
| **Base reward rate** | 2% — 2 Air Miles per ₹100, uncapped |
| **Reward type** | Air Miles, 1 Air Mile = ₹1 on Kotak Unbox |
| **Welcome benefit** | 2,500 Air Miles (₹2,500) |
| **Lounge** | 4 domestic visits a year (max 2 per quarter) + 2 international via Priority Pass |
Eligibility Criteria
- Kotak does not publish an age or income threshold for this variant in any product document. Approval is at the bank's discretion.
- Lounge access is primary cardholders only — add-on cardholders get none, domestic or international.
- To use the international lounge benefit you must first activate international transactions on the Kotak app or net banking, so the US$1 visit-validation charge can go through.
Welcome Benefit
2,500 Air Miles, worth ₹2,500 against a Kotak Unbox booking. Two conditions: it is credited within 120 days of card issuance, and only if the joining fee is actually paid. On the fee alone, ₹2,500 recovers about five-sixths of the ₹3,000 joining fee in year one.
Reward Structure: How You Earn
1 Air Mile = ₹1 when redeemed for flights, hotels or their add-ons on Kotak Unbox, Kotak's own travel booking platform. That makes the maths unusually transparent.
| Spend | Air Miles per ₹100 | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| Flights and hotels booked on **Kotak Unbox** | 5 | **5%** |
| All other eligible spends | 2 | **2%** |
| Excluded categories (see below) | 0 | **0%** |
How the cap actually works
The card page says accelerated earning is "capped at 15,000 Air Miles per statement cycle", which sounds like the whole 5% stops. The detailed T&C is more precise, and more generous: the 5 Air Miles are 2 base + 3 incremental, and only the incremental 3 are capped.
So once you cross the cap, Unbox travel spending still earns the 2 Air Mile base rate — your effective rate drops from 5% to 2%, not to zero. The cap binds at ₹5,00,000 of Unbox travel spend in a single statement cycle, which almost no cardholder will reach. Incremental Air Miles post within five days of transaction settlement.
The base 2 Air Miles have no cap at all, and there is no minimum transaction value for any rate.
Where you book matters more than what you book
The 5% applies only on Kotak Unbox. The same flight booked on MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip or the airline's own site earns the ordinary 2%. Kotak Unbox is reached through Kotak net banking and the Kotak mobile app.
Worked example
Kotak publishes its own value chart at ₹12,00,000 of annual spend. Running our modelled rates through it reproduces Kotak's figures line by line.
| Category | Annual spend | Air Miles | Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic hotels via Kotak Unbox | ₹90,000 | 4,500 | ₹4,500 |
| International hotels via Kotak Unbox | ₹90,000 | 4,500 | ₹4,500 |
| Domestic flights via Kotak Unbox | ₹1,20,000 | 6,000 | ₹6,000 |
| International flights via Kotak Unbox | ₹1,20,000 | 6,000 | ₹6,000 |
| All remaining spends | ₹7,80,000 | 15,600 | ₹15,600 |
| Renewal benefit | — | 2,500 | ₹2,500 |
| **Total Air Miles** | **₹12,00,000** | **39,100** | **₹39,100** |
Kotak then adds its own valuation of the lounge access — ₹8,000 for four domestic visits and ₹14,595 for Priority Pass plus two international — to reach its ₹61,695 headline. Treat those lounge numbers as the bank's valuation, not cash.
Note that ₹4.2 lakh of Unbox travel across a whole year is nowhere near the ₹5 lakh per-cycle cap, so in Kotak's own scenario the cap never binds once.
Redeeming Air Miles
- On Kotak Unbox: 1 Air Mile = ₹1. Minimum 200 Air Miles per booking, and Air Miles can fund at most 80% of the booking value — at least a fifth must always be paid by card.
- Transfer to partners: eleven airline and hotel programmes, minimum 1,000 Air Miles per transfer with no maximum.
| Partner | Loyalty programme | Ratio | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air Canada | Aeroplan | 2:1 | Airline |
| Air France | Flying Blue | 2:1 | Airline |
| British Airways | Executive Club | 2:1 | Airline |
| Cathay Pacific | Asia Miles | 2:1 | Airline |
| Etihad Airways | Etihad Guest | 2:1 | Airline |
| Qatar Airways | Privilege Club | 2:1 | Airline |
| United Airlines | MileagePlus | 2:1 | Airline |
| Air India\* | Maharaja Club | 2:1 | Airline |
| Singapore Airlines\* | KrisFlyer | 2:1 | Airline |
| Accor | ALL – Accor Live Limitless | 2:1 | Hotel |
| Marriott | Marriott Bonvoy | 3:1 | Hotel |
\ Air India and Singapore Airlines appear in the FAQ table on Kotak's card page but not in the transfer-ratio PDF the T&C links to. Confirm before planning a transfer to either.*
Those ratios are worse than they look. Giving up two Air Miles — ₹2 of Unbox value — for one partner mile only pays off if that mile is worth more than ₹2, and three Air Miles for one Bonvoy point needs a point worth more than ₹3. For most cardholders, booking on Unbox at a flat ₹1 is the simpler and better option. Redemption itself is free: Kotak's FAQ confirms no charges are levied on redeeming Air Miles.
Milestone Benefits
There are none. This card has no spend-milestone programme at all. The 2,500 Air Miles credited each year are a renewal benefit tied to paying the annual fee, not to hitting a spend threshold.
Other Benefits
Renewal benefit. 2,500 Air Miles (₹2,500) on completing each anniversary year, conditional on paying the ₹3,000 annual fee. That alone recovers most of the fee.
Lounge access. Four complimentary domestic visits per calendar year, capped at two per quarter — note the annual total is 4, not 8, so using two in each of the first two quarters leaves nothing for the rest of the year. Plus two international visits per calendar year through Priority Pass, with no quarterly cap. A ₹2 validation charge applies at domestic lounges and US$1 internationally, the latter auto-reversed within seven working days. Primary cardholders only.
Forex markup of 2%. Against the 3.50% most Kotak cards charge, and among the lowest available. Dynamic currency conversion is also 2%. But read the next section before counting on it.
Fuel surcharge waiver. 1% on transactions between ₹400 and ₹7,500, capped at ₹4,500 in an anniversary year. That annual cap is genuinely generous — most cards cap at ₹250 per statement cycle, roughly ₹3,000 a year, over a much narrower transaction band.
Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn
The exclusion list is transcribed from the card's own detailed T&C, which names the MCCs directly:
- Utilities and telecom (4812, 4814, 4899, 4900) — including mobile recharges
- Insurance (5960, 6300)
- Education and government (8211, 8220, 8241, 8244, 8249, 8299, 9211, 9222, 9223, 9311, 9399, 9402, 9405, 9950)
- Rent (6513)
- Fuel (5172, 5541, 5542, 5552, 5983) — note 5552 is EV charging, so charging an electric car earns nothing
- Wallet loading (6540)
- Gaming, digital and arcade (5816, 7994)
And three more that aren't MCC-based:
- EMI transactions
- Cash advances
- All international transactions
That last one deserves emphasis. A card marketed on a 2% forex markup pays zero Air Miles on foreign spending. The 2% saves you money against a 3.5% card, but you earn nothing back on top.
One useful clarification: "international transaction" means the merchant is overseas and the transaction settles in foreign currency — not where you're flying. Booking an international flight on Kotak Unbox is a rupee transaction with an Indian merchant and earns the full 5 Air Miles per ₹100. Kotak's own value chart confirms this. Booking that same flight directly on a foreign airline's website earns nothing.
Several excluded categories also attract a fee: 1% on every rent payment, 1% on utility spend above ₹75,000 a cycle, 1% on fuel above ₹50,000 a cycle, 1% on wallet loads and online gaming above ₹10,000 a cycle, and 1% on education paid through third-party apps. Each is charged on the excess only and billed in the following cycle.
Kotak Air+ is also not eligible for the railway surcharge waiver, though it is eligible for the fuel one.

Is the Kotak Air+ Worth It?
If you will book travel through Kotak Unbox, yes. The renewal benefit alone returns ₹2,500 against a ₹3,000 fee. Add four domestic and two international lounge visits, 5% on Unbox bookings and a flat 2% everywhere else with no cap, and the card clears its fee comfortably for anyone with moderate travel spending.
If you book travel anywhere else, it is an ordinary 2% card with good lounge access and a low forex markup — decent, but the headline rate never applies to you.
If most of your spending is abroad, look elsewhere. The 2% markup is excellent; earning nothing on those spends is not. A card with a 3.5% markup that still pays 2% back leaves you in a similar place.
The real strengths are the ones that don't make the marketing: a reduced 42% APR instead of Kotak's usual 45%, a genuinely uncapped 2% base rate, and a ₹4,500 annual fuel surcharge cap on a wide ₹400–₹7,500 transaction band. The weaknesses are the international-transaction exclusion, the absence of any milestone programme, no disclosed insurance cover on a ₹3,000 travel card, transfer ratios that are worse than straight Unbox redemption, and an annual domestic lounge entitlement of 4 rather than the 8 that "2 per quarter" implies.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is a Kotak Air Mile worth? ₹1, when redeemed against flight, hotel or add-on bookings on the Kotak Unbox platform. A minimum of 200 Air Miles is needed per booking, and Air Miles can cover at most 80% of the booking value.
How do I earn 5 Air Miles per ₹100? Book flights or hotels through Kotak Unbox, reached from Kotak net banking or the Kotak mobile app. Booked anywhere else, the same spend earns the 2 Air Mile base rate.
Is the 5 Air Mile rate capped? Partly. Of the 5 Air Miles, 3 are incremental and capped at 15,000 Air Miles per statement cycle — reached at ₹5,00,000 of Unbox travel spend in one cycle. The 2 base Air Miles keep accruing afterwards, so you drop to 2%, not 0%.
Do I earn Air Miles on international spends? No. All international transactions are excluded from Air Miles accrual, despite the card's low 2% forex markup. Booking an international flight on Kotak Unbox does earn, because that is a rupee transaction with an Indian merchant.
What is the forex markup? 2%, against 3.50% on most Kotak cards. Dynamic currency conversion is also charged at 2%.
How many lounge visits do I get? Four domestic visits per calendar year, capped at two per quarter, and two international visits per calendar year via Priority Pass. Primary cardholders only. Validation charges of ₹2 domestic and US$1 international apply; the US$1 is auto-reversed.
Can I transfer Air Miles to airlines? Yes — nine airline programmes (Aeroplan, Flying Blue, Executive Club, Asia Miles, Etihad Guest, Privilege Club, MileagePlus, Maharaja Club and KrisFlyer) all at 2 Air Miles for 1 partner mile, plus Accor at 2:1 and Marriott Bonvoy at 3:1. Minimum 1,000 Air Miles per transfer, no maximum. Since Unbox pays a flat ₹1 per Air Mile, transferring only makes sense if you value a partner mile above ₹2. Note that Air India and Singapore Airlines appear only in the FAQ, not in the transfer-ratio PDF.
Are there milestone benefits? No. This card has no spend milestones. The 2,500 Air Miles credited each year are a renewal benefit conditional on paying the annual fee.
Is there a fee waiver on the annual fee? Yes — ₹4 lakh of eligible retail spend in an anniversary year waives the ₹3,000 annual fee. Be aware that Kotak's own product page contradicts this: its fees table prints "Condition for waiver of Annual Fees: Not Available". The MITC — the regulated fees document — gives the waiver in its fee table and names Kotak Air+ explicitly in a footnote about which categories are excluded from that waiver's calculation, which a footnote could not do if the waiver did not exist. Treat the MITC as correct and the page as stale, but confirm with the bank before you plan around it.
There is no waiver on the joining fee at any spend level.
Which spends don't count towards the ₹4 lakh? MITC footnote 2 names five categories that are stripped out before the waiver is calculated: rent, wallet loads, utilities, education and transportation. The underlying MCC schedule is wider still — it also removes insurance, government payments, fuel, online gaming, passenger railways, tolls, B2B, agricultural services and contractors. On a card whose base rate is 2% uncapped, those are categories you may be tempted to route here for the earn; they build no progress towards the waiver.
Which spends earn nothing? Utilities and telecom including mobile recharges, insurance, education, government and tax, rent, fuel (including EV charging on MCC 5552), wallet loads, gaming and arcades, EMI transactions, cash advances and all international transactions.
What is the fuel surcharge waiver? 1% on transactions between ₹400 and ₹7,500, capped at ₹4,500 in an anniversary year. No Air Miles accrue on fuel transactions, and cumulative fuel spends above ₹50,000 in a cycle attract a separate 1% fee on the excess.
Do Air Miles expire? The uploaded card page and detailed T&C do not say. Confirm the expiry policy with Kotak before accumulating a large balance.
