Kotak Air Credit Card Review 2026: Air Miles on Unbox Travel, Conditional Lounge Access, Fees & FAQs

The Kotak Air Credit Card is the entry point to Kotak's Air Miles range — the ₹999 sibling of the ₹3,000 Kotak Air+. It earns 1 Air Mile per ₹100 on everyday spend and 3 Air Miles per ₹100 on flights and hotels booked through Kotak Unbox, and it redeems at a clean 1 Air Mile = ₹1 against travel on that same platform.

It is a genuinely decent card at its price, with two sharp edges: the lounge access is conditional on your previous quarter's spend, and the categories excluded from earning are broad enough to include fuel.

Kotak Air Quick Overview

**Card type**Travel rewards card
**Best for**People who book travel through Kotak Unbox and spend at least ₹60,000 a quarter
**Joining / annual fee**₹999 + GST, same on renewal. Annual fee waived on ₹2.5 lakh of eligible spend in an anniversary year
**Network**Visa and RuPay
**Top reward rate**3% — 3 Air Miles per ₹100 on Kotak Unbox flight and hotel bookings
**Base reward rate**1% — 1 Air Mile per ₹100, uncapped
**Reward type**Air Miles, 1 Air Mile = ₹1 on Kotak Unbox travel
**Welcome benefit**1,000 Air Miles (₹1,000)
**Lounge**4 domestic visits a year, max 2 per quarter — but only if you spent ₹60,000 the previous quarter

Eligibility Criteria

Kotak publishes an age band and residency requirement and no income floor for this card:

  • Primary cardholder aged 21 to 60; add-on cardholder 18 or above
  • Resident of India

If you need a stated minimum income to plan around, you will not find one on the product page — approval is at Kotak's discretion.

Welcome and Renewal Benefits

Welcome: 1,000 bonus Air Miles. Credited within 120 days of card issuance, and only if you have paid the joining fee. At 1 Air Mile = ₹1 on Kotak Unbox that is ₹1,000 against a ₹999 joining fee — the first year is effectively free.

Renewal: 1,000 bonus Air Miles. Credited within 30 days of paying each year's annual fee.

There is a wrinkle worth understanding here. The renewal benefit requires you to pay the annual fee. The spend-based waiver removes the fee — and with it the renewal Air Miles. The two are close to equal in value (₹1,000 of Air Miles against ₹999 plus GST), so it is nearly a wash, with the waiver marginally ahead because you save the GST too. Do not spend to hit the waiver because of the renewal benefit; they cancel out.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

How the cap actually works

The accelerated rate is capped at 5,000 Air Miles per statement cycle, which Kotak says is reached at ₹2.5 lakh of Unbox travel spend in a cycle. That arithmetic only works if the cap meters the incremental 2 Air Miles rather than all 3 — ₹2,50,000 at 2 per ₹100 is exactly 5,000.

The T&C confirms it: "After hitting 5,000 Air Miles cap, customers will still earn 1 Air Mile per ₹100 spent on additional hotel & flight bookings within the same cycle."

So past the cap your Unbox rate drops from 3% to 1%, not to zero. Unless you are booking more than ₹2.5 lakh of travel in a single statement cycle, the cap will never bind.

Where you book matters more than what you book

The 3% is a Kotak Unbox rate, not a travel rate. The same flight booked on MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, the airline's own site or a hotel's website earns 1 Air Mile per ₹100 — the base rate — not 3.

This is the single most important thing to understand about the card. If you are not willing to route your bookings through Kotak's platform, this is a 1% card with a fee.

Worked example

A cardholder spending ₹5,00,000 in an anniversary year, split the way Kotak's own value chart assumes:

CategoryAnnual spendAir MilesValue
Domestic hotels via Kotak Unbox₹25,000750₹750
International hotels via Kotak Unbox₹25,000750₹750
Domestic flights via Kotak Unbox₹37,5001,125₹1,125
International flights via Kotak Unbox₹37,5001,125₹1,125
All remaining eligible spends₹3,50,0003,500₹3,500
Renewal benefit—1,000₹1,000
**Total****₹4,75,000****8,250****₹8,250**

Against a ₹999 fee that is a net ₹7,250, or about 1.5% on the spend. Kotak's own chart reaches ₹16,500 by adding ₹250 of fuel surcharge waiver and valuing four lounge visits at ₹8,000 — ₹2,000 each, which is aggressive. Lounge access is worth what you would otherwise have paid, and most people would not pay ₹2,000 for a domestic lounge.

Redeeming Air Miles

Air Miles redeem on Kotak Unbox, and the rate depends on what you buy:

  • Flights and hotels — 1 Air Mile = ₹1. This is the best rate and the one the card is designed around.
  • Instant vouchers — 1 Air Mile = ₹0.50. Half the value. Avoid unless you have Air Miles about to expire.
  • Transfers to airline and hotel partners — see below.

Two limits apply to travel redemptions: a minimum of 500 Air Miles per redemption, and Air Miles may cover at most 80% of the booking value. You always pay at least a fifth in cash, so you cannot liquidate a balance into a free ticket.

Air Miles expire 3 years from the date of accrual.

Minimum 1,000 Air Miles per transfer, and a hard ceiling of 1,00,000 Air Miles per card account per calendar year.

Be clear about what these ratios cost you. At 2:1 you give up ₹2 of guaranteed Unbox value for one partner mile; at 3:1, ₹3. Transferring is only worth it if you have a specific high-value award redemption lined up and you have done the arithmetic. For almost everyone, booking through Unbox at ₹1 per Air Mile is the better move.

Note that the Kotak Air card's transfer list is shorter than the Kotak Air+'s, which adds Air Canada, Etihad and Singapore Airlines.

Milestone Benefits

None. The Kotak Air has no spend-milestone programme — no vouchers at ₹1 lakh, ₹3 lakh or any other threshold. The only anniversary-year threshold on this card is the ₹2.5 lakh fee waiver.

Other Benefits

Domestic lounge access — with a condition. Four complimentary visits a year, capped at 2 per calendar quarter, primary cardholder only. Add-on cardholders get none.

The condition is the part to read carefully: you must have spent ₹60,000 or more in the previous calendar quarter to get access in the next one. That means:

  • A brand-new cardholder has no lounge access in their first quarter
  • A quarter where you spend ₹55,000 costs you the following quarter's two visits
  • Reaching the full 4 visits a year requires ₹60,000 of spend in each of at least two consecutive quarters, and realistically in all four

A ₹2 validation charge is levied on your card for each visit.

There is no international lounge access on this card. That is a Kotak Air+ benefit.

Fuel surcharge waiver. 1% on transactions between ₹500 and ₹5,000, capped at ₹3,500 in an anniversary year. Useful — but note that fuel earns no Air Miles at all on this card (see below), so the waiver is the entire fuel benefit.

Contactless payments up to ₹5,000 without a PIN.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn

The detailed T&C lists the excluded MCCs outright rather than pointing at Kotak's general schedule, which is refreshingly clear. No Air Miles accrue on:

EMI transactions and cash advances are excluded too.

Fuel is the one that catches people out. A card marketed on everyday spend that pays nothing on petrol is a meaningful gap — you get the 1% surcharge waiver and that is all.

One thing this list does not contain is a B2B block. Unlike the IndiGo Kotak cards, which exclude advertising services, business services, agricultural services and contractors, the Kotak Air pays its 1 Air Mile base rate on all of those. If your spend skews towards business-services MCCs, that is a quiet advantage.

Special-category fees stack on top. Separate from the earning exclusions, Kotak charges 1% on cumulative fuel spend above ₹35,000 per statement cycle and 1% on cumulative utility spend above ₹50,000 — on the excess only, billed the following cycle. So heavy fuel spend on this card earns nothing and costs 1%.

The fee waiver is worth a closer look. Kotak's own product page prints "Condition for waiver of Annual Fees: Not Available" — but the MITC, which is the regulated fees document, gives the card a waiver on ₹2.5 lakh of retail spend in an anniversary year, and names Kotak Air explicitly in a footnote about which categories are stripped out of that calculation. A footnote cannot describe exclusions from a waiver that does not exist. Treat the MITC as correct and the page as stale, but confirm with the bank before planning around it.

The excluded categories are rent, wallet loads, utilities, education and transportation — and the underlying MCC schedule is wider still, also removing insurance, government payments, fuel, online gaming, railways, tolls, B2B, agricultural services and contractors. Roughly a third of the taxonomy does not count towards the ₹2.5 lakh.

Note also that the Kotak Air is not eligible for the railway surcharge waiver, though it is eligible for the fuel one.

Kotak Air vs Kotak Air+

The two cards share a platform, a currency and a structure. What differs:

The Air+ is better on every single line. The question is whether the extra ₹2,001 of fee buys ₹2,001 of extra value for you specifically. The doubled base rate alone pays for it at ₹2 lakh of annual spend; the forex markup difference pays for it if you spend ₹1.3 lakh abroad. If neither applies, the Air is the right card.

Who Should Get the Kotak Air Credit Card

Good fit if:

  • You book flights and hotels and are happy to route them through Kotak Unbox
  • You spend at least ₹60,000 a quarter, consistently, so the lounge access actually materialises
  • You want an entry-priced travel card and the Air+ fee is more than you want to commit
  • Your spend includes B2B or business-services categories that most Kotak cards exclude

Look elsewhere if:

  • You book travel through OTAs or direct with airlines — you'd be earning 1%
  • Fuel is a large share of your spend — it earns nothing here
  • Your spend is lumpy and you can't guarantee ₹60,000 every quarter — the lounge benefit will keep slipping away
  • You spend meaningfully abroad — 3.50% forex is expensive, and the Air+ at 2% would pay for its own fee

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the joining and annual fee on the Kotak Air Credit Card? ₹999 + GST for both, with the annual fee waived on ₹2.5 lakh of eligible retail spend in an anniversary year.

How much is an Air Mile worth? ₹1 when redeemed against flights and hotels on Kotak Unbox. Only ₹0.50 on instant vouchers. Partner transfers have no published rupee value.

Do Air Miles expire? Yes — 3 years from the date of accrual.

Can I redeem Air Miles for a whole ticket? No. Air Miles can cover at most 80% of any Kotak Unbox booking; you pay the rest by card. The minimum redemption is 500 Air Miles.

Do I get lounge access straight away? No. Access in any quarter requires ₹60,000 of spend in the previous calendar quarter, so a new cardholder gets nothing in their first quarter.

Does fuel earn Air Miles? No. Fuel MCCs are on the exclusion list. You get the 1% fuel surcharge waiver (₹500–₹5,000 transactions, ₹3,500 a year) and nothing else — and a 1% fee above ₹35,000 of fuel spend per cycle.

Can I transfer Air Miles to airlines? Yes, to six airlines and two hotel groups, at 2:1 or 3:1. Minimum 1,000 Air Miles per transfer, maximum 1,00,000 per card account per calendar year. The ratios are poor against the ₹1 Unbox rate — only transfer if you have a specific award booking in mind.

Is the RuPay variant worth taking? If you use credit-card-on-UPI, yes. UPI spends on the RuPay variant earn the same 1 Air Mile per ₹100, outside the excluded MCCs.

What happens if I don't pay the annual fee because of the waiver? You keep the ₹999 plus GST but lose the 1,000 renewal Air Miles. The two roughly cancel out, with the waiver slightly ahead.
