The Diners Club Black Metal Edition sits immediately below INFINIA and earns at the same headline rate: 5 Reward Points per ₹150, worth ₹1 each, for a 3.33% base. At ₹10,000 it costs a fifth less than INFINIA and gives up surprisingly little.

Where it differs from the plastic Diners Club Black is subtler than the finish suggests, and the differences run in both directions — the Metal Edition has a larger SmartBuy allowance but the same grocery cap, and a more generous insurance cap. Anyone treating the two as one product with a different card body will get the numbers wrong.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

The Metal Edition earns 5 Reward Points per ₹150 on retail spending, at ₹1 a point when redeemed for SmartBuy flights and hotels — a 3.33% base rate matching INFINIA.

SmartBuy bookings earn up to 10X, which is 50 points per ₹150 or 33.33%. That is the number the card is sold on, and it is real — but it runs out quickly, and the section below is the one to read.

The caps that actually bind

Headline rates mean little until you know where they stop. These are the limits on this card:

CapLimit
Grocery2,000 points per calendar month
Utility2,000 points per calendar month
Telecom2,000 points per calendar month
Smartbuy10,000 points per calendar month, plus a daily limit of 10,000; brand vouchers sub-limited to 1,000 inside it
Voucher1,000 points per calendar month
Insurance5,000 points per calendar month
Dining1,000 points per day

Diners Club acceptance is the structural risk. Diners runs on the Discover network in India and is accepted at far fewer terminals than Visa or Mastercard, particularly outside metros and at small merchants. A 3.33% card you cannot use at the counter earns 0%. HDFC issues a Visa or Mastercard companion on request for exactly this reason, and it is worth taking.

Worked example

₹1 lakh a month, with a SmartBuy booking that overruns the cap.

CategoryMonthly spendPointsValue at ₹1
SmartBuy, up to the cap₹33,00011,000 RP₹11,000
SmartBuy, past the cap₹17,000566 RP₹566
Grocery (capped at 2,000)₹20,0002,000 RP₹2,000
Other retail₹25,000833 RP₹833
Fuel₹5,0000 RP₹0
**Monthly total****₹1,00,000****14,399 RP****₹14,399**

The ₹17,000 of SmartBuy spend past the cap earned ₹566 instead of the ₹5,666 it would have earned inside it. That single line is the difference between this card and INFINIA.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn

  • Where you earn nothing: Earns nothing at all: fuel; EasyEMI and e-wallet loading; rent, property management, maintenance and packers-and-movers; government transactions; education paid through third-party apps such as CRED, Cheq or MobiKwik (paying a college or school directly still earns); and online skill-based gaming. Points are also REVERSED if a retail transaction is later converted to SmartEMI.
  • Point expiry: Reward Points are valid for 24 months from accrual and lapse thereafter — HDFC states 'Unredeemed Reward Points will expire/lapse after 2 years of accumulation'.
  • Redemption fee: ₹99 per redemption.
  • Grocery cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on grocery, w.e.f. 1 January 2023 — HDFC names this card in the capped list. Binds at ₹60,000 of grocery spend a month.
  • Utility cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on utility spends, w.e.f. 1 September 2024, binding at ₹60,000. Telecom carries its own separate 2,000-point cap.
  • Telecom cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on telecom spends — a separate pool from utilities.
  • Smartbuy cap: 10,000 ACCELERATED Reward Points per calendar month on SmartBuy, with a daily limit of 10,000. The daily and monthly figures are the SAME, so the daily limit never binds on its own — a single day's booking can exhaust the month. Inside it, brand vouchers bought through GyFTR or Woohoo carry a 1,000-point sub-limit w.e.f. 1 July 2026 — subcapinr holds it, and it is PART OF this cap, not additional. A DAILY cap cannot be expressed in this schema — capperiod offers monthly, quarterly, annual and pertransaction, with no daily option. The bucket carries the MONTHLY figure and the daily limit is recorded in sub-fields and notes.
  • Voucher cap: 1,000 accelerated Reward Points a calendar month on brand vouchers bought through GyFTR or Woohoo via SmartBuy, w.e.f. 1 July 2026 — confirmed. A sub-limit INSIDE the SmartBuy cap, not additional to it, so voucher purchases eat the same 7,500-point allowance. INFINIA's equivalent sub-cap is 3,000; every other card including this one is 1,000.
  • Insurance cap: 5,000 Reward Points per calendar month on insurance spends, binding at ₹150,000 of premium at the 5-points-per-₹150 base rate. Note this differs between the two Diners Black variants — 2,000 on the plastic card and 5,000 on the Metal Edition — where their grocery caps are identical at 2,000.
  • Dining cap: 1,000 Reward Points PER DAY on the 2X weekend dining rate at standalone restaurants. capperiod is 'pertransaction' because the controlled vocabulary has no daily option and pertransaction is the nearest available — it is NOT a per-transaction limit. At 10 points per ₹150 the daily cap binds at ₹15,000 of weekend dining in a day. A DAILY cap cannot be expressed in this schema — capperiod runs monthly, quarterly, annual or pertransaction, with no daily option. The capbucket therefore carries the MONTHLY figure, and the daily limit is recorded here and in the rate's notes. A calculator working only from cap_buckets will miss it, and will overstate anyone who concentrates spend into a few days.

What the Published Data Does Not Tell You

The brand-voucher sub-cap is 1,000 accelerated points a month, and this is settled. An earlier figure of 3,000 circulated for this card; the dated 1 July 2026 rule reserves 3,000 for INFINIA and sets 1,000 for every other card, and that is the rule that governs here. Voucher purchases consume the same 7,500-point SmartBuy allowance rather than sitting on top of it.

Is the HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Metal Edition Credit Card Worth It?

At ₹10,000 with a ₹8 lakh reversal threshold, the Metal Edition is the best-value card in the HDFC premium range for most people — better than INFINIA on cost-adjusted terms unless you spend enough to clear INFINIA's ₹10 lakh reversal.

The SmartBuy cap is where it loses to INFINIA. 10,000 accelerated points a month against INFINIA's 15,000. At 45 accelerated points per ₹150 that binds at about ₹33,000 of SmartBuy spend a month. Past that you are on the 5-point base rate. If you book a ₹1 lakh holiday through SmartBuy, roughly two-thirds of it earns nothing accelerated.

The quirk worth knowing: the daily and monthly SmartBuy caps are both 10,000 on this variant, so a single day's booking can exhaust the entire month. The plastic Diners Black, capped at 2,500 a day, forces you to spread bookings across at least three days to use its full allowance — a smaller cap that is sometimes easier to fill.

Acceptance is the real reason to hesitate, not the economics.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the fee for HDFC Diners Club Black Metal? ₹10,000 plus GST on joining and renewal. The renewal fee is reversed at ₹8,00,000 of annual spend.

How does Black Metal differ from the plastic Diners Club Black? Three things. The SmartBuy cap is 10,000 accelerated points a month against 7,500. The daily SmartBuy limit is 10,000 against 2,500. And insurance is capped at 5,000 points a month against 2,000. Grocery is capped identically at 2,000 on both. The base rate, fee structure and lounge access are the same.

What is a Reward Point worth on this card? ₹1 when redeemed for flights and hotels on SmartBuy. Less through other channels — products and vouchers pay around half, and statement cashback less again.

What is the SmartBuy cap? 10,000 accelerated Reward Points per calendar month, with a daily limit also of 10,000 — so the whole month's allowance can be used in one day. Brand vouchers bought through GyFTR or Woohoo carry a 1,000-point sub-limit inside that, w.e.f. 1 July 2026.

Is Diners Club widely accepted in India? Less widely than Visa or Mastercard. Diners runs on the Discover network and acceptance thins outside large cities and at smaller merchants. HDFC will issue a Visa or Mastercard companion card, which most holders take.

Did this card move to ₹200 earning blocks in May 2026? No. Both Diners Black variants were named on HDFC's unchanged list, along with INFINIA and BizBlack. They still earn per ₹150.

Is there a cap on weekend dining? Yes — 1,000 Reward Points per day on the 2X weekend dining rate at standalone restaurants, which binds at ₹15,000 of dining in a day.
