The plastic Diners Club Black earns at exactly the same headline rate as the Metal Edition — 5 Reward Points per ₹150 at ₹1 a point, a 3.33% base — for the same ₹10,000 fee. The difference is entirely in the caps, and they are tighter in two places and identical in a third.

If you are choosing between the two, the card body is the least important distinction.

Reward Structure: How You Earn

The card earns 5 Reward Points per ₹150 on retail, at ₹1 a point through SmartBuy travel. SmartBuy bookings earn up to 10X — 50 points per ₹150, or 33.33%.

The SmartBuy allowance is 7,500 accelerated points a month with a 2,500-point daily limit. Those two numbers interact: at 2,500 a day you need at least three separate days to use the full monthly allowance. Book a single large holiday and you will cap out on day one having used a third of your month.

The caps that actually bind

Headline rates mean little until you know where they stop. These are the limits on this card:

CapLimit
Grocery2,000 points per calendar month
Utility2,000 points per calendar month
Telecom2,000 points per calendar month
Smartbuy7,500 points per calendar month, plus a daily limit of 2,500; brand vouchers sub-limited to 1,000 inside it
Voucher1,000 points per calendar month
Insurance2,000 points per calendar month
Dining1,000 points per day

This is the one place the plastic card behaves worse than Metal in practice. The Metal Edition's daily limit equals its monthly one, so a single booking can use the whole allowance. Here it cannot. Anyone who books travel in one sitting rather than across a week loses two-thirds of the benefit.

Worked example

₹1 lakh a month with a single ₹40,000 SmartBuy booking made in one day.

CategoryMonthly spendPointsValue at ₹1
SmartBuy, accelerated up to the daily limit₹8,3002,500 RP₹2,500
SmartBuy, remainder at base rate₹31,7001,056 RP₹1,056
Grocery (capped at 2,000)₹20,0002,000 RP₹2,000
Other retail₹35,0001,166 RP₹1,166
Fuel₹5,0000 RP₹0
**Monthly total****₹1,00,000****6,722 RP****₹6,722**

Split that same ₹40,000 booking across three days and the SmartBuy line earns 7,500 accelerated points instead of 2,500 — ₹5,000 more for no extra spending. The daily cap is the single most actionable number on this card.

Category Restrictions: Where You Won't Earn

  • Where you earn nothing: Earns nothing at all: fuel; EasyEMI and e-wallet loading; rent, property management, maintenance and packers-and-movers; government transactions; education paid through third-party apps such as CRED, Cheq or MobiKwik (paying a college or school directly still earns); and online skill-based gaming. Points are also REVERSED if a retail transaction is later converted to SmartEMI.
  • Point expiry: Reward Points are valid for 24 months from accrual and lapse thereafter — HDFC states 'Unredeemed Reward Points will expire/lapse after 2 years of accumulation'.
  • Redemption fee: ₹99 per redemption.
  • Grocery cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on grocery, w.e.f. 1 January 2023 — HDFC names this card in the capped list. Binds at ₹60,000 of grocery spend a month.
  • Utility cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on utility spends, w.e.f. 1 September 2024, binding at ₹60,000. Telecom carries its own separate 2,000-point cap.
  • Telecom cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on telecom spends — a separate pool from utilities.
  • Smartbuy cap: 7,500 ACCELERATED Reward Points per calendar month on SmartBuy, with a daily limit of 2,500. At 2,500 a day the monthly cap needs at least 3 separate days to reach. Inside it, brand vouchers bought through GyFTR or Woohoo carry a 1,000-point sub-limit w.e.f. 1 July 2026 — subcapinr holds it, and it is PART OF this cap, not additional. A DAILY cap cannot be expressed in this schema — capperiod offers monthly, quarterly, annual and pertransaction, with no daily option. The bucket carries the MONTHLY figure and the daily limit is recorded in sub-fields and notes.
  • Voucher cap: 1,000 accelerated Reward Points a calendar month on brand vouchers bought through GyFTR or Woohoo via SmartBuy, w.e.f. 1 July 2026 — confirmed. A sub-limit INSIDE the SmartBuy cap, not additional to it, so voucher purchases eat the same 7,500-point allowance. INFINIA's equivalent sub-cap is 3,000; every other card including this one is 1,000.
  • Insurance cap: 2,000 Reward Points per calendar month on insurance spends, binding at ₹60,000 of premium at the 5-points-per-₹150 base rate. Note this differs between the two Diners Black variants — 2,000 on the plastic card and 5,000 on the Metal Edition — where their grocery caps are identical at 2,000.
  • Dining cap: 1,000 Reward Points PER DAY on the 2X weekend dining rate at standalone restaurants. capperiod is 'pertransaction' because the controlled vocabulary has no daily option and pertransaction is the nearest available — it is NOT a per-transaction limit. At 10 points per ₹150 the daily cap binds at ₹15,000 of weekend dining in a day. A DAILY cap cannot be expressed in this schema — capperiod runs monthly, quarterly, annual or pertransaction, with no daily option. The capbucket therefore carries the MONTHLY figure, and the daily limit is recorded here and in the rate's notes. A calculator working only from cap_buckets will miss it, and will overstate anyone who concentrates spend into a few days.

What the Published Data Does Not Tell You

The brand-voucher sub-cap is 1,000 accelerated points a month, and this is settled. An earlier figure of 3,000 circulated for this card; the dated 1 July 2026 rule reserves 3,000 for INFINIA and sets 1,000 for every other card, and that is the rule that governs here.

Is the HDFC Bank Diners Club Black Credit Card Worth It?

At ₹10,000 with an ₹8 lakh reversal, the economics are sound and the base rate is excellent. The question is whether the caps suit how you actually book.

Choose the plastic card if you book travel piecemeal — a flight this week, a hotel next — because the 2,500-a-day limit costs you nothing and the fee is identical.

Choose the Metal Edition if you book in single large transactions, or if you spend meaningfully on insurance: its insurance cap is 5,000 points a month against 2,000 here, and its SmartBuy allowance is 10,000 against 7,500. For the same fee, Metal is the better card for most spending patterns.

Both share the same real weakness: Diners Club acceptance. Outside metros and at smaller merchants you will reach for a companion Visa or Mastercard, and that card earns nothing like 3.33%.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does HDFC Diners Club Black cost? ₹10,000 plus GST on joining and renewal, with the renewal fee reversed at ₹8 lakh of annual spend — the same as the Metal Edition.

What is the SmartBuy cap on Diners Club Black? 7,500 accelerated Reward Points a calendar month, with a daily limit of 2,500. Because of the daily limit the monthly cap cannot be reached in fewer than three days.

Should I take the plastic card or the Metal Edition? Metal, for most people, at the same fee: 10,000 SmartBuy points a month against 7,500, no restrictive daily limit, and a 5,000-point insurance cap against 2,000. Grocery is capped identically at 2,000 on both. The plastic card is only preferable if you value the card body less than nothing.

Did this card move to ₹200 blocks in May 2026? No. Both Diners Black variants were on HDFC's unchanged list along with INFINIA and BizBlack, and still earn per ₹150.

What is a point worth? ₹1 redeemed for flights and hotels on SmartBuy. Materially less through other channels.

Is weekend dining capped? Yes — 1,000 Reward Points per day on the 2X standalone-restaurant rate, binding at ₹15,000 of dining in a day.
